Have a look in the DIY section as there are some posts on building hides and basking spots etc. Using wood and bricks would be fine. The best substrates are those which are not loose, such as reptile carpet or tiles. I personally prefer tiles as they look nice, are easy to clean and help keep the nails trim (i used to get cut to pieces by my beardies nails before i put tiles in). There are nice pieces of driftwood available too- mine provides some good hiding spots- here's a pic to see what i mean (there are far better vivs out there but thought id post mine anyway to give you an idea).

DON'T USE CEDAR,i heard its deadly,make sure you clean AND bake your wood/bricks or whatever non-store bought items your putting in.Get a reptisun 10.0 uvb tube, NEVER use sand, use tile or paper towels,make sure he has a log for him to climb closer to his basking spot,small water dish maybe?salad dish....and perhaps some decorations,best of luck!
