I got my wife a new beardie for Valentines day. It's a leatherback, and very pretty, but thats all we know. Was wondering if anyone could tell us the sex and maybe the type? We were hoping its a girl, and she tentatively named her Baby. Not sure if its too early to say, she was hatched in October or November. Thanks for any help!!
I couldn't determine the sex of my beardie until she was 6 months. To be able to tell sex, the tail would have to be gently lifted a little bit higher (at around a 90 degree angle). From what i can see it looks more female but it is so hard to say for sure from the photo.
From the wife:
I knooooooooow! We drove 70 miles to a different reptile store in Orange County, really to just have a look around and get some dubia's for our other Beardie (Buddy). I really loved the way she looked so I asked if I could hold her. When Danny took her to hold her and she jumped back to me I just knew it was love (Buddy doesn't seem to be very fond of me). I believe it was his plan all the time to make me fall in love so we could have another.
I'll have him help me hold her later to take a better picture later. She is wickedly fast. And she licks everything, which is just so cute
Yes-- Baby is definitely a she upon proper inspection. And she does something cuter every day! I know she loves me, she pancakes and gets all super comfy whenever I pick her up (I almost renamed her pancake, but now I just call her babycake). She fell asleep on my neck for the first time last night. By day she is , very curious, and a hungry lil dubia chomper. She will not, however, eat a cricket if we stick her in a bin with 15 and she hasn't eaten all day. Which is fine as we are now trying to breed dubias. If you had asked me a few months ago if I would be hoping that roaches in my home would reproduce I'd have thought you were nuts. I just tell myself they are dubias, not r-o-a-c-h-e-s.
