Need help figuring out what took him

Looking for answers please help

My boy passed last night. I need to know what he dealt with.

He's had what I've referred to as "the mystery bump" since around August 22', or at least thats when i noticed it. Pervious vet wasn't concerned and it never impacted his QOL. Didn't shrink, didn't grow. It sat on his face right below the corner of his lip.

In December, I took him to the vet because he was making some noises reminiscent of a cough. Vet prescribed oral antibiotics with the idea that there was some sort of respiratory infection or lung infection. The meds made him upset (full black beard and stomping around) so after 6 or so days, the vet recommended taking him off of them. Then afterwards, no noise, he was fine.

Two weeks ago, he stopped eating and had a consistent black beard. One of his poops came with a little bit of red in his urate. Next 2 poops were small but no red. Thought it could have been stress or something minor.

Few days later, he made the same noises he did months ago, but more aggressively and in a more distressing way, along with one of his eyes being watery, but no mucus or anything else. Vet prescribed supplements and pain meds. First two days of administering them was met with resistance.

Yesterday, what was the third day, he stopped swallowing any on his own. I had to annoy him to get him to swallow any. Halfway through the day, when I gave his second dose of supplements, he let it drip out of his mouth. Nothing I did would get him to swallow.

Last night, he stared showing signs that he was absolutely dying. I stopped trying to feed him his supplements, only giving his pain meds. He was nearly limp, throwing his head up with his mouth open, and not opening his eyes. One time he shook his head back and forth aggressively.

His final 2 hours or so was him suddenly running forwards with his eyes closed, making the noises, throwing his head back, rubbing his face into my bedsheet, shaking his head back and forth, and shallow breathing. At one point, I believe he had a seizure. My partner was trying to find somewhere that would euthanize him that late at night while I held him.

He suffered so so much and I don't know why. I don't know what could progress this quickly and harshly. MBD and ADV have warning signs and are slow progressing from what I can tell. Something like brain cancer would be slower too. I'm at a loss and I don't know what to do.

Pics are his setup, his bump (right side), and his meds.

He passed in my arms, loved. He's with his brother now.

There was no biopsy done or fluid drained from the lump on the mouth? Also looking at the lighting on the tank where is the UVB? Were you using a coil? I am sorry for him and you and feel for you feeling helpless is a awful feeling :( --- Flagging to Tracie the vet tech she may be able to give more insight on the cause from what you are describing

No, the vet decided it wasn't worth the risk of opening up the bump. It was a mass of some sort rather than fluid. Firm but slightly squishy.

Uvb and CHE in the dome, right and left side respectively. He had a fresh uvb bulb. Just replaced his dome too.

Thank you :/

Ok so coil UVB's are not adequate UVB --- they are basically killers of dragons - we always recommend people get rid of them when coming to this forum for help --- so I am going to say the incorrect UVB is a good cause for the health issues --- :( also I see one digital thermometer giving only ambient temps - digital probe thermometers are recommended to get surface basking temps - 95-100- Tracie needs to advise on the bump issue - going forward if and when you do decide to get another dragon please come back to this forum so we can help you get your tank on par - surface basking temps - temps in the tank and UVB are absolutely critical for overall health for dragons - again I am so sorry for the loss of him

I’m sorry to hear about your guy. I know how hard it is to have one go out of nowhere and not know why.
Now I’m no vet but I do have experience with a few different issues since I take in rescue dragons.
What you’ve described with his behaviour and the sounds does lead me toward respiratory distress and/or nausea.
The throwing back of the head with the mouth open does sound like he was having difficulty getting enough air and the head shaking and sounds may also have been indications that he was trying to throw something up/dislodge some sort of obstruction.
My old guy a couple years back did have a lump around his throat region that turned out to be a Chromatophoroma tumor (pretty nasty agressive tumor originating from pigment cells in reptiles and amphibians) he did have that surgically removed and in a huge miracle is still with me but by the time of his proceedure the tumor was partially obstructing his throat and windpipe and he was exhibiting some similar signs to your guy as a result of that partial obstruction.
That said given you’ve said the lump didn’t appear to grow or shrink it likely wasn’t a Chromatophoroma as they tend to grow rapidly.
May have also been the lump was a cyst. The watery eye could have been a result of the pain/discomfort and/or the lump growing internally and putting pressure on the eye area.
It may be too late to do if you’ve already made final arrangements for your guy but if in doubt and you have the money to spare you can always request the vets perform a necropsy to investigate cause of death. This is usually a good path to take in cases where the passing has been sudden as it can help you make sure there wasn’t something majorly contagious going on which is important if you have other dragons in your household.
Additionally as mentioned for future reference UVB tube lights are much better to use as they will evenly distribute UVB across the enclosure whereas ‘regular’ bulbs will only emit it in a conical area directly below the bulb.
I use in my enclosures a tube light in a reflector for the UVB but I also have two dome lamps I position on the side of the enclosures my dragons spend most of their time, one with a basking spotlight and the other with a ceramic heat emitter and these provide targeted warmth during the day (basking spotlight) and night (ceramic heat emitter bulb)

Hello,

Oh I am so very sorry you lost your boy, suddenly, that is so devastating for you. I know how heart
breaking losing them is.
The bump was most likely the culprit, in my opinion. The vet should have been more proactive & the
best would have been for it to have been aspirated to determine what was going on. If it was a type of
cancer then it probably spread, even though slowly, it affected his health.
I agree, if possible, a necropsy is valuable in learning what could have gone wrong & helping with
closure for you. Though, I realize that nothing will bring him back.
My sincere condolences for you.

Tracie
