Philip jumped out of hand today and landed on the counter top. When he hit, the outer covering of one his nails popped off, leaving him with just the center intact. At first he was shaking his hand because it obviously hurt, but now, he's getting around just fine. I'm a little freaked out right now and would like to know what I can do for him? He went to the vet last week for a tail tip injury and is currently on antibiotics. Would that help his nail avoid infection?
Hi there....it should be fine. Most minor injuries heal well without antibiotics, even deeper wounds do so. What to watch for is he may start biting it. If he does, just get some unpasteurized honey [ like from a health food store] to put on it, then wrap it with gauze and tape it to keep him from getting at it. The honey is a natural antibacterial/antibiotic.
How bad was his tail ? Mostly those heal well on their own, too but if it looked infected it was good to have it seen.
Thanks for the reassurance I've already rinsed it in saline and wrapped a tiny band aid up and over it. Tomorrow I'll try the honey.
His tail wasn't too bad. I think it somehow got injured, then the tip turned dark. The vet put him on antibiotics and a cream for 2 weeks and it looks a tiny better.
The poor guy's had very bad luck lately Do you think the nail will fall off or regrow the dark coating?
