Yes it can be confusing ! There are 2 types of calcium for reptiles, some includes synthetic D3, the other type doesn't. We don't give them the D3 calcium every time because it can lead to toxicity. Their body makes it's own D3 , the high output uvb and the regular calcium w/out D3 gives them what they need. If they get too much synthetic D3 it can be toxic over time.

I'm late I know. For the roaches please don't feed them food with protein. Dubias store protein as uric acid the way we store fat. Uric acid causes gout in beardies. Feed your dubias the same vegetables you feed your dragon with the exception of carrots.
Personally I don't use calcium with D3 at all. With correct uvb bulbs your dragon should be producing natural D3. I DO dust with regular calcium 6 to 7 days per week. Once per day. I offer a multivitamin twice per week. I mix it and the calcium powder 50/50
I offer liquid water by using an eyedropper a coulpe times per week. An eyedropper works better than a syringe because you can control the amount better. If you go that route, go slow at his pace. Don't try to force it, he could get choked or get it in his lungs.
Oh as mentioned, don't over dust the bugs. Just a very light sprinkle is plenty.

That's why I don't use a d3 supplement. With proper uvb the synthetic shouldn't be needed.

I think NickAdv made a typo, the calcium dusting should be the opposite . It's only 2 x a week with D3 at most , another 3-4 days without D3.
oh- ok.. im a little confused now lol
Yes, that's right, I made a typo. @AHBD is right.
I would even say that with good UVB, D3 is not necessary.
For example, I have never given D3, but I know that it is recommended on the forum in this dosage.

So... I understood why I made a typo.
It seems I'm also confused.
As I wrote above, with good UVB lighting there is no need for additional D3, so I did without it. But without good UVB the dragon's health will be in danger.
Let's figure out whether D3 is needed at all. Otherwise there will be conflicting advice on the forum.
He should be getting the D3 5 x per week ONCE per feeding dusted lightly on his insects

It's only 2 x a week with D3 at most , another 3-4 days without D3.

It happens that dragons grow very quickly and by 6 months they become an adult. In this case, correction of their insects is required and here good advice can be given by @AHBD
Figgs, how many insects are you feeding Syrax per day and what type ? Beardies can grow very quickly when fed too much and this can and often does hurt them in the long run. Their liver , kidneys and other organs develop problems. But there are different amounts suggested depending on the size of the beardie and the type + size of insects.Your dragon is young but already 17" long so a sub adult and can be fed insects just 2-3 X a week and greens on the other days.

For simplicities sake we'll use crickets or dubias as an example. We'll say " approximately" so there's wiggle room to use a couple more or less than these suggestions . If someone is feeding a 17-18" beardie 15 large crickets at a time it would be too many. But if it was 15 medium , it would probably be fine. Of course having the larger crickets you could use 6-7 large ones 2 X a week and greens on the other days. Using larger ones would save you money because you would be buying + using less.

Dubias are bigger + meatier so you would never even feed them 6-7 large dubias, it would be maybe 3-4 of them 2 times a week along with greens. Some beardies seem to have a hard time even chewing up a very large dubia so it might be best to always go with ones that are not quite adult.

BSFL are very small for a larger beardie even if you get the large size larva so you could use probably 10-12 large at a time, even a few more but not too many and this would be expensive.
Superworms can be fed as one meal a week but only 3-5 at a time since they aren't quite as nutritious.
Those are the main feeder insects used so those are the ones I mentioned.

So that's a lot of insects and you can probably cut back about a third of that.
Can you post a full body pic of Syrax ? .

Hey! I'm planning on ordering a 4x2x2 for my next beardie but I'm worried about lighting. I have a UVA and a UVB but they are small (the UVA just being a bulb and the UVB being 12 ish inches?) My house is drafty so I need a strong light that puts off quite a good amount of heat, any suggestions?
