Milk Snakes

I have been looking for some time and considering taking the leap for a milk snake. My interest in reptiles started with snakes (a snake handling session at the zoo when I was 7/8!) and after some going over, I really think I would love a milk snake.

Would anyone recommend a website (or offer information, themselves, naturally) on care for a snake. The one bug bear I had from bearded dragon research was all the sources seemed to contradict another and no one straight forward answer - so I would really appreciate if anyone could point me to a more "secure/sure fire" place for decent care so I can start the research of them.

Cheers

It might help if you say what kind of milk snake you're wanting. There are several different subspecies, and care DOES vary for different ones. In general, once you narrow down what subspecies you want, care is pretty straightforward.

I don't know of any good care sheets to link you to, but, IIRC, some of the more common ones like Hondurans and Sinaloans tend to have similar care to Corn snakes... mid-80s warm spot, generally provided by a thermostatically controlled heat pad, room temperature ambient/cool side, moderate humidity, aspen substrate, water dish, and at least 2 hides--one on the warm spot, and the other on the cool side--though more (i.e. a couple in the middle and maybe a humid hide) is always appreciated. I hope that's helpful to get you started...

There are a couple good snake forums you can go to to get help from actual milk snake keepers, too. I don't know of any milk snake specific ones, but you should find plenty of happy-to-help milk snake keepers over at the http://CornSnakes.com forum or the http://iHerp.com community. I hear http://Ball-Pythons.net is good, too. CornSnakes.com is pretty Corn-specific, but there are many, many experts of "other" species there--the forum attracts a very wide variety, since it seems like a great many people who really "specialize" in some species also happen to have a corn snake. iHerp and BP.net both cater toward the reptile community as a whole, rather than one particular species.

Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
Getting ready for another day. Feeling sleepy. 😴
I just walked into my room and instead of looking at me, Swordtail's eyes darted directly to the ice cream drumstick I'm holding
Finally replaced Swordtail's substrate
I miss you so much, Amaris 💔
