Male bearded dragon bled a lot during an attempt to breed

I noticed today that my male was doing his regular head bob and of course tried to mount my female. All of a sudden I saw the male loose a lot of blood from his vent area. It kinda happened really fast and I think either he or she caught it with a toenail. His vent looks fine from the outside, but I am worried that he may still be bleeding inside his vent. Is this something to panic about or does this sometimes occur during mating?

Hi Jenna....your'e right, they clasp with their back feet and they get snagged by their own claw. I have seen it happen before in some of my males, it never ended up causing any problem with mine. Just keep an eye out to be sure there is no further problem, and keep him from breeding for a few weeks. If you see signs of lethargy or illness, take him to a vet and explain what happened, but he should be fine.

Thanks, Im just being a nervous mom because this is my 5 year old male that I hatched from an egg and this has NEVER happened before! I have 6 beardies and have been taking care of rescues for 5 years now and have never seen this! He seems fine. I wish I knew how to post pics to show the amount of blood that came out. I am feeding him extra high iron enriched foods incase he lost a little too much blood. He seems fine though. It all happened so fast. But they are separated for now.

Hello,

I have never experienced this since I do not breed. There have been many incidents here that the males have knicked themselves in the breeding or breeding attempts.
He should be fine, but I can understand that it would cause panic mode though with that much blood.
Do you keep them separate all of the time though?

Tracie,
I have 6 bearded dragons and all are separated except for my personal pair. I rescue and rehome them so I have stackable cages. I keep "Alice" and "Reeves" together all year round because it seems when I separate them, my male will look depressed. They have been together for 4 years now without a problem. I just got them to wake up early from brumation. They usually never really mate, he just sometimes head bobs, but this time he was extra frisky and when they did, he was so excited that I think his toenail grabbed his skin. I agree that beardies rather live alone, and that is why all of mine are separated except for these two. They get along very well and because they have been together for many years, I feel bad separating them.

I read that this happens sometimes with males while breeding. I even called a friend that breeds them and she has even heard of this happening. I was just so concerned because this has never happened in the past. Now maybe i'll be a little more prepared for it. He doesnt seem to be hurt at all. He is basking on his hammock right now and walking to the glass to get out and explore the living room. I did separate my female from him right now though since he needs time to heal. If I would not have seen it happen, I would not even have been able to tell from how he looks. He looks and is acting completely normal.

Hello,

How is your male doing today? He should heal up pretty quickly, poor guy. It does happen though, more frequently than what is usually reported.

He is completely normal. He looks fine and is busy basking in his sofa and eating his greens. He even paced to get out of his enclosure today. What a ham. Im so relieved.

Hello,

WOW, that is a lot of blood!
I would have been worried too, talk about giving you a heart attack!
So he is back to being his little ham self today? He is a great looking handsome boy!

I miss you so much, Amaris 💔
What is a quick way to warm up a cold beardie? His heating element went out overnight and now he's very cold.

i feel so sad reading your about me 😢
Clapton is acclimating okay I think. He's quick as lightning so I'm not sure how much I should bring him out of his house yet. He's not at all interested in his salad though. I wonder if I should change what I'm giving him. Least he's eating his crickets.

Things to do:
Buy calcium powder
Material to raise surface for basking spot
Scenery decals for back of tank
