so I've been wondering if I should see if i can get a timer for my lights or not? I don't have a super steady schedule when it comes to waking up in the morning and im worried its going to affect reggie. Like right now ive been up since 4 something but sometimes i dont wake up until 10. reggie normally wakes up around i think 9 something. i try and turn his lights on between 6-8. i have an alarm set for 8 but i sleep through it most of the time so im really not sure what to do. his lights get turned off between 8 and 9 normally. im scared that the lights not coming on steadily is gonna hurt him somehow. like when i dont wake up until 10 he doesnt normally get his full 12 hours which scares me. the thing that im worried about with a timer is that his lights turn on but i dont wake up until later and he gets hungry. I havent really looked into timers besides hearing people say they use them but i have 4 lights in his cage so idk if one timer could work all of them. im also gonna try changing my alarm sound and see if it makes me wake up but even if it does it probably wont work for long. i also believe its woken me up and ive turned it off while half asleep and just went back to bed because it didnt say i missed it.

Hi!

Just thought I’d share with you a different option than a timer in case you are interested - and what has made my dragons light cycles so easy to keep up with 🙂

I’ve always had trouble with actual timers for some reason, so I bought smart plugs from the company Kasa on Amazon.

You download the Kasa app, plug the units into into the outlet, plug your cords into the units, and then you can turn the lights on and off from anywhere you are at any time you want from your phone.

Once I got them I wondered how I ever functioned w/o them.

Here’s just a screenshot of them … if you want to check them out. Just type in “Kasa Smart Plug”

The two pack is $20, three pack is $23, etc

If you are definitely wanting to take the timer route, there are lots of people on this site that do use them, so hopefully someone can chime in on timer suggestions for you 🙂

I use timers, i haven't had great success with the reptile branded ones. The ones that use push down tabs aren't very accurate. The digital ones loose time, as time goes on.
I have started using the ones from lowes. They are around 20 to 25 dollars and so far have worked flawlessly for me. The big down fall is they only have 1 to 2 sockets and the one with 1 socket doesn't except a cord that has 3 blades. That is easily solved by using an adapter, the adapter cost less than a dollar and you get it at lowes also. The best way to use with multiple lights is to plug a power strip into the timer and then every light comes on at once. If you use night time heat you'll need a second timer for that. I'll link the timers and the adapter, if you decide to go that route you can just show the links to an employee and they can show you where to find them 🙂.

This is the one that don't need the adapter.

This one will need an adapter to work with a power strip.
This is the adapter.

I use a thermometer that actually has a timer on it. Using a timer will make it natural for your beardie. Here is a photo of when you the lights should turn off and on (however this is using Australia’s time so you would have to convert the time) :

I just set Swordtail's timer for his bath and paused it so I could actually fill his soaking bowl up and he crawled over my phone and canceled the timer 🤣
