NT COVID-19 update 5 April 2022 EXTRACT

REF = Coronavirus (COVID-19)

There were 550 new cases of COVID-19 recorded in the NT in the 24 hours to 8pm on 4 April 2022. Of these, 508 were positive cases from a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT).

There were 445 cases recorded in the Top End region, 40 in Central Australia, 17 in East Arnhem, seven in the Big Rivers region, three in the Barkly region and 38 are under investigation.

There are currently 18 patients in hospital. There are two patients requiring oxygen and one patient in ICU.

The number of active cases in the NT is 2,951.

Public health measures
To slow the spread of COVID-19 in our community and reduce the rate of transmission, the following public health measures are in place across the NT:

>Masks must be worn in high-risk settings including hospitals, GP clinics, remote health clinics, renal facilities, aged care facilities, family violence shelters, sobering up shelters, homeless shelters, corrections facilities and disability facilities. Disability support workers need to wear a mask when undertaking home-services.
>Masks must also be worn in airports and on flights, in line with federal requirements.
>It is highly recommended that all people aged 12 years and over wear a mask when physical distancing cannot be applied.
>COVID-19 vaccination
It’s important everyone aged 16 years and over has their booster dose. Three doses of the vaccine significantly reduces your risk of getting really sick from COVID-19 and will help to protect you against any future strains of the virus.

To reduce the risk of COVID-19 spreading in our communities, it is important for everyone to follow all health directions:

>If you have symptoms, stay away from others and get tested for COVID-19
>Wash your hands with soap and water and use hand sanitiser regularly
>Do not go to work if you feel sick
>Maintain a physical distance of 1.5 metres where possible.

NT COVID-19 update – CHO Direction changes

Changes are being made today to Chief Health Officer (CHO) COVID-19 Directions in the Northern Territory.

These changes are in line with the Territory’s progression to living with COVID-19, which has seen our health goals shift to managing the rate of spread and preventing serious illness.

The updates to our public health controls are also in response to the Territory’s high double-dose COVID-19 vaccination rate, which has been effective in saving lives and reducing the severity of the virus.

Vaccination remains our best defence against COVID-19 and it is important everyone stays up-to-date with their vaccinations. A third dose of the vaccine provides 88 per cent protection against hospitalisation and severe illness from COVID-19.

The CHO will continue to review and update COVID-19 Directions as required to ensure they reflect the current COVID-19 situation in the NT.

Removal of the Territory Vaccine Pass
The Territory Vaccine Pass has been removed. This means proof of vaccination is no longer required to enter certain venues such as bars, pubs, nightclubs, restaurants, casinos, cinemas and theatres.

Infrastructure to support The Territory Check In-App will remain in place.

COVID-19 vaccination
It’s important everyone aged 16 years and over has their booster dose. Three doses of the vaccine significantly reduces the risk of getting really sick from COVID-19 and will help protect against future strains of the virus.

People aged 16 years and over are eligible for a booster dose three months after they have received their second dose. People who have had COVID-19, can get vaccinated as soon as they have recovered.

All children aged 5-11 years should get the vaccine to protect themselves and the community from COVID-19. Children need two doses of the vaccine, eight weeks apart.

The COVID-19 vaccine is available at NT Health Vaccination Centres, participating GP clinics, respiratory clinics and Aboriginal health clinics. Book online or call the COVID-19 Hotline on 1800 490 484.

>Maintain a physical distance of 1.5 metres where possible
>Face masks must be worn in high-risk settings

There are currently 28 patients in hospital. There are 7 patients requiring oxygen and one patient in ICU.

The number of active cases in the NT is 3,013.

You can have your booster, 3 months after your 2nd dose. If you have had COVID-19, you can get vaccinated as soon as you have recovered.

Protect your children against COVID-19 by getting them vaccinated. All children aged 5 years and over should get the COVID-19 vaccine.

The COVID-19 vaccine is available at NT Health Vaccination Centres, participating GP clinics, respiratory clinics and Aboriginal health clinics.

Book online or call the COVID-19 Hotline on 1800 490 484.

COVID-19 testing
Everyone should get tested for COVID-19 if showing symptoms. A number of NT Rapid Antigen Testing and Distribution Points have been established.

To reduce the risk of COVID-19 spreading in our communities, it is important for everyone to follow all health directions:

If you have symptoms, stay away from others and get tested for COVID-19.
Wash your hands with soap and water and use hand sanitiser regularly.
Do not go to work if you feel sick.
Maintain a physical distance of 1.5 metres where possible.

You can have your booster, three months after your second dose. If you have had COVID-19, you can get vaccinated as soon as you have recovered.

Protect your children against COVID-19 by getting them vaccinated. All children aged five years and over should get the COVID-19 vaccine.

NT COVID-19 update 11 April 2022 EXTRACT
There were 375 new cases of COVID-19 recorded in the NT in the 24 hours to 8pm on 10 April 2022. Of these, 330 were positive cases from a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT).

There were 275 cases recorded in the Top End region, 33 in Central Australia, 13 in East Arnhem, 7 in the Big Rivers region, 4 in the Barkly region and 43 are under investigation.

There are currently 31 patients in hospital. There are 5 patients requiring oxygen and one patient in ICU.

The number of active cases in the NT is 3,214.

You can have your booster, 3 months after your 2nd dose. If you have had COVID-19, you can get vaccinated as soon as you have recovered.

Protect your children against COVID-19 by getting them vaccinated. All children aged 5 years and over should get the COVID-19 vaccine.

The number of active cases in the NT is 3,152.

CHO Direction changes - close contacts and testing
From today, people in the NT who have been infected with COVID-19 will not be considered a close contact or be required to undertake testing for 12 weeks after they exit isolation. Previously, this period was 8 weeks.

After 12 weeks, people are required to comply with all COVID-19 testing and isolation requirements.

Further changes will be made to other Chief Health Officer Directions as required, and in line with the Territory’s progression to living with COVID-19.

Kimberley residents and travellers to take precautions against mosquito bites this holiday period
The Department of Health is reminding residents and travellers in the Kimberley region to take extra precautions to prevent mosquito bites over the Easter break and school holidays, as the risk of serious mosquito-borne disease has increased.

The alert follows a significant increase in the activity of both Murray Valley encephalitis (MVE) and Kunjin viruses.

The increased virus activity had been detected through the Department of Health’s sentinel chicken surveillance program, which acts as an early warning system.

Department of Health Managing Scientist, Dr Abbey Potter, said both viruses are transmitted to people through the bite of an infected mosquito and whilst rare, can cause serious disease.
“We are currently moving into a high-risk period for transmission of both MVE and Kunjin viruses within the region.”
“Many holiday-makers will be travelling to the Kimberley region over the school holidays. It will be important to pack an effective repellent and long, loose-fitting clothing for everyone in the family,” she said.
“Residents are also urged to protect themselves over this time, particularly when spending long periods of time outdoors, such as camping or fishing”.
“While the risk of being infected and becoming unwell is low, the resulting illness can include serious neurological symptoms. In the case of MVE, this may result in long term effects or even be fatal.”

Initial symptoms of MVE include fever, drowsiness, headache, stiff neck, nausea and dizziness. People experiencing these symptoms should seek medical advice as soon as possible. In severe cases, people may experience seizures, lapse into a coma, be left with permanent brain damage or die.

In young children, fever might be the only early sign of infection. Parents should see their doctor or local health service if concerned, particularly if their child experiences drowsiness, floppiness, irritability, poor feeding, or general distress.

Dr Potter said symptoms of Kunjin virus disease are usually milder than MVE, but in rare cases, infection may result in headache, neck stiffness, fever and coma.

There is currently no specific treatment or vaccine for MVE or Kunjin virus disease. The only effective way to prevent infection is to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes.
“It is also important to note that although Japanese encephalitis virus has not yet been picked up by our surveillance systems in WA, we cannot rule out the possibility that it may be present at undetected levels,” Dr Potter added.

Japanese encephalitis (JE) is a rare mosquito-borne disease that has just been detected in the Northern Territory, a further increase in its range from the recent outbreak in several other Australian states.
WA & NT Monsoon Mozzie Plague

The Kimberley region and Northern Territory have similar mosquitoes and animal hosts (water birds and feral pigs), which are required by JE virus to survive. The current environmental conditions are particularly conducive to mosquito-borne virus activity.
“Whilst the community may be concerned about the possibility of JE virus making its way into WA, it is important not to be alarmed. The same mosquito avoidance measures for MVE and Kunjin viruses will reduce your risk of exposure to this virus also”.

Dr Potter said that there is no need to change your travel plans, this is just an important and timely reminder not to be complacent. You should protect yourself and your family through the following measures:
>avoid outdoor exposure, particularly at dawn and early evening
>wear protective (long, loose-fitting, light-coloured) clothing when outdoors
>apply an effective personal repellent containing diethyltoluamide (DEET), picaridin or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (also known as PMD) evenly to all areas of exposed skin and always follow the label instructions
ensure insect screens are installed and in good condition on houses and caravans
>use mosquito nets and mosquito-proof tents if sleeping outside
>use mosquito coils and mosquito lanterns and apply barrier sprays containing bifenthrin in patio and outdoor areas around houses
>ensure infants and children are adequately protected against mosquito bites, preferably with suitable clothing, shoes/socks, bed nets or other forms of insect screening
>remove water holding containers from around the home and garden to ensure mosquitoes do not breed in your own backyard.
