Across NSW, 95.3 % of people aged 16 and over have received a first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, and 93.8 % have received two doses to Tuesday 18 January.
Of people aged 12 to 15, 82.3 % have received a first dose of COVID-19 vaccine, and 78.3 % have received two doses.
Of people aged 5 to 11, 19.1 % have received a first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

NSW Health is today reporting the deaths of 25 people with COVID-19; 16 men and 9 women.
1 person was aged in their 30s,
2 people were aged in their 50s,
5 people were aged in their 60s,
5 people in their 70s,
7 in their 80s,
4 in their 90s
and 1 was over 100 years old.

Of the 25 people who died;
16 people had received at least two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine,
1 person had received one dose and eight were not vaccinated.
Older age is a significant risk factor for serious illness and death for COVID-19, particularly when combined with significant underlying health conditions.
Of the 5 people who died aged under 65,
3 had received at least two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine,
1 had received one dose and one was not vaccinated.
The person aged in their 30s had received 3 doses of a COVID-19 vaccine and had serious underlying health conditions.
6 people were from western Sydney,
5 people were from south eastern Sydney,
3 people were from Sydney's inner west,
2 people were from the Central Coast,
2 people were from the northern beaches,
2 people were from the Lake Macquarie area,
1 person was from the Newcastle area,
1 person was from south western Sydney,

and 1 person was from the Illawarra Shoalhaven region.
This brings the total number of COVID-19 related deaths in NSW since the beginning of the pandemic to 978.

There are currently 2,781 COVID-19 cases admitted to hospital, including 212 people in intensive care, 68 of whom require ventilation.

There were 30,825 positive test results (cases) notified to 8pm last night – including 13,178 positive rapid antigen tests (RATs) and 17,647 positive PCR tests.

Of the 13,178 positive RAT results, 11,034 of these positive tests were from the previous seven days. Please note there may be some cases included in these numbers where people have reported positive RATs on multiple days and/or where people have also had a positive PCR test during the same reporting period.
The 17,647 positive PCR results were returned from 73,259 PCR tests. 301 COVID-19 cases detected by PCR tests have been excluded following further investigation, bringing the total number of cases detected by PCR tests in NSW since the beginning of the pandemic to 708,502.

Victoria's COVID-19 hospitalisations have risen to 1,206, up from 1,173 reported on Wednesday, and a further 15 deaths were recorded in the state.

Of the patients in hospital, there are 122 in intensive care, 40 of whom are receiving ventilation.

There are now at least 246,894 active cases in the state.

The state has officially recorded 21,966 new COVID-19 infections, but the true number of new cases in the community could be much higher.

About 27 % of Victorian adults have received three doses of a vaccine so far.

NSW and Victoria are expected to present a united schooling plan to National Cabinet this week.
Plans under consideration include calling upon retirees and final year university graduates to substitute for teachers who are isolating, and requiring each student to do twice-weekly RATs.
The Commonwealth government will also support states and territories that want to implement surveillance testing for schools on a 50-50 cost sharing basis.

QLD DAILY CASES SNAPSHOTS

Queensland has reported nine deaths overnight and 16,812 new known COVID infections on Thursday.

Deputy Premier Steven Miles said the update took the total pandemic death toll in the state to 72.

A total of 852 people were in hospital with the virus, with 42 in intensive care — 20 of whom were on ventilators.

The news came as state government prepared to allow vaccinated Queensland residents arriving from overseas to enter without quarantine from 1am this Saturday, after removing all domestic travel restrictions last week. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said with COVID now widespread across the country, the virus was likely more prevalent within the state than on planes flying entering from abroad.

Key tourist hotspots of the Gold Coast and Cairns have been reporting the highest daily COVID-19 rates per capita this week.

WA COVID-19 update 20 January 2022
Exposure sites continue to be updated on the HealthyWA website.
WA Health has reported 5 new local COVID-19 cases and 5 travel-related cases to 8pm last night.
4 of the local cases are contacts of previously reported cases.
2 of those cases have been in quarantine and 2 have been potentially infectious in the community.
The 5th case, identified overnight, has currently not been linked to any known cases. This person has been infectious in the community. Contact tracers are now working with these cases to determine potential exposure sites and these will be uploaded to the HealthyWA website when confirmed.

Exposure sites
WA Health has identified potential higher risk COVID-19 exposure in East Victoria Park, Northbridge, Osborne Park, Applecross and Mount Lawley, and urgently requires people who visited these sites at the times listed to get tested immediately and self-quarantine.

Testing advice
People are urged to continue to check the exposure sites page of the HealthyWA website for updates, and if they have been to an exposure site to follow the listed health advice.
Anyone in the Perth and Peel regions experiencing symptoms should get tested immediately and isolate until they receive a negative result.

Testing clinics
4,919 Western Australians were swabbed at clinics yesterday.
WA Health is expanding testing capacity, including operating hours of clinics.
Private clinics are also available.
Testing is available free of charge at private testing clinics for people who have been advised by WA Health to get tested, or who have been present at exposure sites at the times listed on the HealthyWA website.

Vessels
WA Health is closely monitoring 2 vessels off the WA coast, both reporting probable COVID cases on board through returned positive Rapid Antigen Tests.
All positive crew members on board these vessels are isolating in their cabins and being monitored safely.

SafeWA
Yesterday, 1,917,009 scans were recorded on the SafeWA app. This represents a 0.7 per cent increase in usage from the previous day.

Other information
There are currently 79 confirmed active cases in WA.
Of these, 23 are in hotel quarantine, 56 are in self-quarantine. No cases are currently in hospital.

Today’s 10 new cases bring the State’s total number of COVID-19 cases to 1338.

1247 people have recovered from the virus.

Border controls
Information about Western Australia’s controlled border arrangements, conditions of entry and quarantine is available online.

The scheduled reopening of WA state and international borders next month has been delayed indefinitely on expert health advise to enable WA to vaxx more adults , teenagers and children and get mRNA boosters into as close as possible to every WA residents' arms , and to prepare schools ( with RATs and air purification and good room and hall ventilation , and enable WA's hospitals to prepare for the likely onslaught by Delta & Omicron when the borders are opened .
The premier did not provide a new date for when quarantine-free travel would be allowed into WA.

However, the list of people exempt from the hard borders will increase.
People attending funerals, court, visiting those in palliative care or who are terminally ill, or those with strong recent connections, will now be allowed into the state after testing and quarantine.

McGowan labelled the Omicron Covid spread a “new state of emergency” but said the border rules would be reviewed during the coming weeks.

“Unfortunately, the world changed in December, Omicron arrived,” he said. “It would be irresponsible and reckless for the state government to ignore the facts and ignore the reality of the situation playing out on the east coast.

“Allowing hundreds or thousands of Omicron-infected people to fly straight into Perth from 5 February with no testing, no quarantine and no public health measures would cause a flood of Covid across our state. It would cause a surge in cases, a surge in hospitalisations, and result in thousands of people not being able to work or go to school. We know that bad health outcomes lead to economic pain.”

COVID-19 vaccinations
Yesterday, State-run clinics administered 11,654 COVID-19 vaccinations. Please note: information about the number of vaccinations administered at other clinics, including GPs and pharmacies is currently not available.

Anyone who received their second dose of a COVID-19 vaccine four or more months ago can now book their booster dose and ensure they have maximum protection against the disease.
Additional appointments for children aged 5 to 11 have been added at State-run clinics between January 22 and January 30, these can be booked online at VaccinateWA.
A dedicated paediatric vaccination clinic will also open at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre (PCEC) and increased children's vaccinations will be available at Kwinana and Ellenbrook vaccination clinics. All other appointments booked at the PCEC clinic will continue as scheduled.

SA LOCAL DAILY CASES

South Australia has recorded 11 COVID-related deaths, a record number for the state.

Premier Steven Marshall said the high number might be the result of late reporting of some deaths in aged care.
"When I spoke to Professor [Nicola] Spurrier about this — because it did seem like an unusually large number — she said it's quite possible that it's an accumulation [across] a number of days," he said.
"There is no urgent reporting requirement from residential aged care facilities into SA Health.
"Nevertheless, [it's] very sad news and I express our sincere condolences on behalf of the state to those friends and family of the 11 deceased."

Five of today’s deaths occurred in aged care facilities.

The deaths include two men in their 50s, two men and a woman in their 70s, three men and a woman in their 80s, and two men in their 90s.

The state recorded 3,777 new cases, an increase on previous days but still below the seven-day average.

That brings the total number of active cases to 35,525.

There are 290 people in hospital with COVID-19 and 29 in ICU.

Mr Marshall said nine people were on ventilators, but SA Health later clarified that number stood at six.

South Australia has reached its 90 per cent double-vaccination rate for people 12 and over, but the milestone has come three weeks later than authorities had hoped.

Hospital reverses strict ban on partners during childbirth
Lyell McEwin Hospital has reversed its tough restrictions that saw partners only allowed while women were in active labour and four hours after their baby's birth.

The hospital, in Adelaide's north, announced today that, while final decisions were still being made, a support person would be allowed throughout an induction, the duration of labour and birth of a baby.

Parents will also be allowed to "visit their newborn baby every day" but how long those visits could be, and whether partners would have to leave after the birth of a baby, has not yet been announced.

Mr Marshall, who had ordered an urgent review of the restrictions, said he was "pleased that there's been a sensible resolution".
"The partner will be available to be present during the induction, the birth, they'll be able to visit on a daily basis," he said.
"There will still be some restrictions but I think this is a sensible outcome."

The South Australian Premier says his government will not be signing up to a five-day isolation period for people who test positive to COVID-19.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison said yesterday a 5-day period is "under active consideration" but that the federal government will take medical advice on any possible change.

COVID-19 case numbers in the ACT have nearly halved in the past day, falling below 1000 for the first time in more than a week.
Thursday saw the national capital record 892 new infections, with 254 coming from PCR tests, while the remaining 648 were from rapid antigen tests.

Despite the fall in new cases hospitalisations rose slightly with 62 patients now being treated, up from 60 the previous day.

5 are being treated in intensive care, an increase from the three recorded on Wednesday, while there are two patients on a ventilator.

It comes as ACT health authorities revealed 80 per cent of those hospitalised with COVID-19 in the territory are unvaccinated
The number of active cases in Canberra has plummeted by about one-third in the past day alone.

There are now 4447 active cases in the ACT, down from more than 6600 the day before.

Vaccination rates have climbed to 34.7 % of Canberrans over 18 having had their booster shot.

The ACT government on Wednesday lowered the waiting time for people to receive their booster shots from four to three months since their second dose.

Almost 38 % t of five to 11-year-olds have received their first vaccine dose.

ACT LOCAL DAILY CASES

The Tasmanian government will provide parents with a back-to-school COVID-19 pack, including rapid antigen tests, to help prepare for the start of term one on February 9.
The plan will stay in place for the first five weeks of the ten-week term but Premier Peter Gutwein said some elements could stay for the whole year.

He said he understood some parents were feeling worried.
"We want to make sure that the plans we have in place, like masks and testing, are copied and mirrored in our schools to make sure our schools have a sufficient level of resources so they can support students if they need it."

Who gets the rapid antigen tests and masks ?
The COVID-19 pack will include two rapid antigen tests per child, for use if a child becomes unwell or symptomatic.
"Students should only test if symptomatic and they should stay home if the result is positive," Mr Gutwein said. "There is no need for daily testing."

High school students will have to wear surgical masks — but primary school children won't.

High schools will have a supply on hand if students do not have their own.

Mr Gutwein said the government had 1.6 million masks and 500,000 rapid antigen tests in stock, with another 800,000 RATs expected to arrive in the next week.
He said it was anticipated 1.5 million RATs would be needed over the five weeks. A total of 7.5m have been ordered.

The masks and RATs will also be available to students in the independent and Catholic education systems.

How are schools being modified ?
Windows are being modified across Tasmanian classrooms to make sure they open and classrooms are well-ventilated.
For classrooms not on the periphery, 4,500 air purifiers are being installed.

The Premier said outdoor spaces were being optimised where possible to allow outdoor learning and school breaks will be staggered so students are not all gathering outside at the same time.

What happens if there's a positive case in a classroom?
The Deputy Director of Public Health Scott McKeown said the definition of close contact would be managed differently in the school setting than in the home.

If there is a single case in a classroom, parents and carers of will be told to monitor for symptoms in their child.
"They will be able to continue school," he said.
"They won't be defined as close contacts because the level of exposure is different."

If there are five or more cases in a classroom within seven days, an outbreak management team will be put in place.
Any child who is a close contact of a household case will have to follow existing quarantine guidelines and stay home for at least seven days, with testing on day one and six.


What happens if teachers get sick ?
The Premier said the Department of Education was making sure there was a pool of teachers available if lots of teachers had to take time off because of COVID-19.
There are currently 1,700 relief teachers on the register and 400 recently-retired staff who could be re-employed if teacher shortages became an issue.
Like healthcare and aged care workers, they would be eligible for exemption from close contact isolation rules if were not symptomatic. "They will be able to return to school, even if they are a close contact, but they will have to be rapid antigen tested on a daily basis," the Premier said.

What if my child is medically compromised?
The Premier said schools would contact parents of medically compromised students individually.
"Students with a disability or who are medically vulnerable will continue to be supported on an individual basis on the basis of their medical action plan, " he said.
"Each school will reach out to parents and carers … prior to school returning to discuss their child's individual plan."

What if my child gets COVID and I need to care for them?
Mr Gutwein reminded parents and carers they could be eligible for a pandemic grant of $750 if they did not have any relevant leave entitlements and needed to care for a child who had to stay home from school with COVID-19.

There were 459 new cases of COVID-19 recorded in the Northern Territory in the 24 hours to 8pm on 19 January 2022. Of these, 364 were positive cases from a Rapid Antigen Test.
This takes the number of active cases in the NT to about 3,970.
New cases recorded include:
• 15 cases in Galiwinku
• 4 cases in Yirrkala
• 10 cases in Umbakumba. The source of the infection is from interstate travel. Health staff are in the community undertaking testing, contact tracing and providing the COVID-19 vaccine.
• 6 cases in high risk settings in Darwin including hostels, sober-up shelters and rough sleepers. This is in addition to four cases yesterday. Danila Dilba Health Service and Larrakia Nation are working together to undertake COVID-19 testing in high risk settings.
• 2 cases at the Darwin Correctional Centre
• 2 cases at the Barkly Work Camp
• 8 cases at the Alice Springs Correctional Centre with further testing being undertaken today
• 1 case in the Old Timers Aged Care Facility in Alice Springs
• 3 cases in Santa Teresa
• 14 cases in Yuendumu
• 10 cases in Ntaria and surrounding homelands
There are currently 54 patients in hospital, with five patients requiring oxygen. One patient is in ICU.
1,114 COVID-19 PCR tests were processed across the NT yesterday.
Yirrkala Lockout lifted
The lockdown in Yirrkala will lift at 2pm today. There are now no restrictions on the reasons to leave home.
Significant testing has been undertaken in Yirrkala with more than 145 tests completed in the past two days. The spread of COVID-19 in Yirrkala has been reduced, with a total of nine cases, including five people in Yirrkala and four in Nhulunbuy. Anyone with symptoms is advised to get tested immediately.
Public health measures
To slow the spread of COVID-19 in our community and reduce the rate of transmission the following public health measures remain in place across the NT:

• A Territory-wide indoor mask mandate
• A lockout in Alice Springs, Yuendumu, Yuelamu and Amoonguna until 23 January
• A lockdown in Galiwin’ku until 24 January
• The Territory Vaccine Pass requires all people in the Northern Territory to show proof of their vaccination status to attend a range of businesses, venues, places and events
COVID-19 testing
Everyone should get tested for COVID-19 if showing symptoms. A number of NT Rapid Antigen Testing and Distribution Points have been established. Individuals can collect RATs for free from NT distribution centres located in Darwin, Katherine, Nhulunbuy, Alice Springs and Tennant Creek.

Across NSW, more than 95 % of people aged 16 and over have received a first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, and 93.9 % have received two doses to Wednesday 19 January.
Of people aged 12 to 15, 82.4 % have received a first dose of COVID-19 vaccine, and 78.3 % have received two doses.
Of people aged 5 to 11, 21.7 % have received a first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

NSW Health is today reporting the deaths of 46 people with COVID-19; 33 men and 13 women. Seven of these deaths have been included following the conclusion of coronial investigations – these seven deaths occurred from 29 December through to 13 January.

Of the 46 people who died; 1 person was aged in their 30s,
1 person was in their 40s,
4 people were in their 50s,
8 people were in their 60s,
12 people were in their 70s,
13 people were in their 80s,
and 7 people were in their 90s.

One person had received three doses of a COVID-19 vaccine,
29 people had received two doses,
2 people had received one dose
and 14 people were not vaccinated. Older age is a significant risk factor for serious illness and death for COVID-19, particularly when combined with significant underlying health conditions.


Of the 7 people who died aged under 65, all were men.

and 5 men were not vaccinated, including the men in their 30s and 40s.
3 of the 5 men who were not vaccinated had significant underlying health conditions and two, including the man in his 30s, did not. Both men who were vaccinated had significant underlying health conditions.

There were 25,168 positive test results (cases) notified to 8pm last night – including 10,015 positive rapid antigen tests (RATs) and 15,153 positive PCR tests.

Of the 10,015 positive RAT results, 8,774 of these positive tests were from the previous seven days. Please note there may be some cases included in these numbers where people have reported positive RATs on multiple days and/or where people have also had a positive PCR test during the same reporting period.

The 15,153 positive PCR results were returned from 88,113 PCR tests. 396 COVID-19 cases detected by PCR tests have been excluded following further investigation, bringing the total number of cases detected by PCR tests in NSW since the beginning of the pandemic to 723,259.

The Omicron - Delta Tsusami gripping Victoria is costing its economy $300 million a week, a large fraction of the losses felt by the state during last year's sixth lockdown. Treasurer Tim Pallas on Friday revealed the Victorian economy is faring much better in the so-called "shadow lockdown" than it did amid the previous Delta wave.
The state was posting weekly losses of about $800 million during Melbourne's 77-day Delta lockdown, before the city reopened in October after hitting a statewide full vaccination rate of 70 per cent.

Despite the rapid spread of the Omicron variant leaving hundreds of thousands in isolation over the summer, Mr Pallas said the wave's impact on the economy is vastly different.
"All the advice that we have is that it is a substantially lesser event," he told reporters.
"We were losing about $800 million a week out of the Victorian economy (last year). The latest advice I'm hearing is closer to $300 million a week.
"We're keeping a close eye and monitoring that."

The treasurer conceded the wave was still having a "dramatic effect" on some businesses and industries, halting their recovery.

But, more broadly, he insisted the state was making inroads to rebuild after six economy-crippling lockdowns.
"It would be true to say this is not an across the board economic recovery. But an economic recovery is underway. Make no mistake about it," Mr Pallas said.
Meanwhile, Victoria is encouraging hundreds of thousands of public sector workers to get their third COVID-19 vaccine jab by offering half a day's paid leave.

More than 300,000 full-time, part-time and casual teachers, paramedics, police officers, firefighters and other public sector workers will be eligible under the arrangement, which was also used for first and second doses.

Employers will foot the bill, unless the payments amount to a "significant additional cost". Staff can also take accrued sick leave if they have an adverse reaction.

Mr Pallas called on the private sector to "do the right thing" and match the state government's half-day leave pledge for its workers.

The state government hasn't ruled out mandating third doses for some workers, he said, but Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton is yet to be asked to provide advice.

Victoria's third dose rate has risen to 28.3% as a four-day "booster blitz" began at eight state-run hubs on Friday.

Prof Sutton said the blitz was off to a strong start, with 36,000 bookings made over the past four days.

One in four children aged five to 11 have received their first vaccine dose, which could rise to one in three by next week.

The Victorian government is still yet to detail its back-to-school plan but has vowed students will return to classes when term one begins on January 31.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says she hopes to get approvals soon to begin local manufacturing of rapid antigen tests to reduce pressure on supply chains.
Ms Palaszczuk said the government was looking at a couple of companies.
“At National Cabinet yesterday I raised this issue, and can I thank the Prime Minister, he said that the TGA will work closely with the state government to iron out any issues that those companies may have to facilitate their accreditation as quickly as possible and to go through the normal processes,” she said on Friday.

The state also welcomed 1.5 million new rapid antigen tests this week.
An additional 2 million are expected to arrive over the next couple of weeks.

Exposure sites continue to be updated on the HealthyWA website. People are urged to check this site regularly and follow the relevant health advice.
WA Health has reported 7 new local COVID-19 cases and 3 interstate travel-related cases to 8pm last night.

Three of the 7 local cases are known contacts of a previously reported case and were potentially infectious in the community.

The 4 other local cases are currently not linked directly to any previous cases. Of these four cases, three are from one household.

They are all in self-quarantine now and public health will continue to monitor them.

Contact tracers are now working with these cases to determine potential exposure sites and these will be uploaded to the HealthyWA website when confirmed.

Exposure sites
WA Health’s contact tracing team continues to identify a new range of exposure sites linked to new cases and it is likely exposure sites will be updated or added. Please continue to check exposure sites regularly, these are listed on the HealthyWA website.

WA Health has identified potential higher risk COVID-19 exposure in East Victoria Park, Northbridge, Osborne Park, Applecross and Mount Lawley, and urgently requires people who visited these sites at the times listed to get tested immediately and self-quarantine.

Testing advice
People are urged to continue to check the exposure sites page of the HealthyWA website for updates, and if they have been to an exposure site to follow the listed health advice.

Anyone in the Perth, Peel and the South West regions experiencing symptoms should get tested immediately and isolate until they receive a negative result.

4,222 Western Australians were swabbed at clinics yesterday.

WA Health is expanding testing capacity, including operating hours of clinics. People are encouraged to check the HealthyWA website to find clinic locations and opening hours.

Private clinics are also available. Testing is available free of charge at private testing clinics for people who have been advised by WA Health to get tested, or who have been present at exposure sites at the times listed on the HealthyWA website.

Vessels
WA Health is closely monitoring two vessels off the WA coast, both reporting probable COVID cases on board through returned positive Rapid Antigen Tests.

All positive crew members on board these vessels are isolating in their cabins and being monitored safely.

SafeWA
Yesterday, 2,079,267 scans were recorded on the SafeWA app. This represents an 8.4 % increase in usage from the previous day.

It is increasingly important for everyone to check in when they visit businesses in WA. Using SafeWA or the ServiceWA app will help authorities contact those who may be at risk quickly and effectively.

Yesterday, 37,909 COVID-19 vaccinations were administered in Western Australia.

Additional appointments for children aged 5 to 11 have been added at State-run clinics between January 22 and January 30, these can be booked online at VaccinateWA.
A dedicated paediatric vaccination clinic will also open at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre (PCEC) and increased children's vaccinations will be available at Kwinana and Ellenbrook vaccination clinics. All other appointments booked at the PCEC clinic will continue as scheduled.

Variants
To date, 358 cases of variant strains have been detected in Western Australia to date – including
151 Omicron strain,
53 Alpha strain,
15 Beta strain,
1 Gamma strain

Australia will accept a negative rapid antigen test from international arrivals with 24-hours of the flights departure, scrapping the requirement for a PCR test however WA remains closed to international and interstate visitors for at least another 6 weeks based on McGowan's presser last night , maybe longer (in order to get more WA residents full vaxxed and more boostered, and to stockpile RATs, and PCRs , N95s and to prep schools and hospital system in WA , esp the regions for in inevitable leakage of Omicron across the borders from either NT or SA.

No new date has been set for when the state may relax its hardline border measures, with Mr McGowan indicating more time was needed to roll out booster shots and vaccines for children , a KPI sited was > 90% triple vaxxed to open WA's borders and nearly all 5-11yos fully vaxxed.

Federal Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese said the decision made by the WA premier was the right call.
"I told (Mark McGowan) I respected and supported the decision," Mr Albanese told reporters in Sydney.
"People were keen to visit loved ones, but the first priority of Mark McGowan has been to keep WA safe. People in WA enjoy life almost as normal, certainly compared with NSW."

South Australia has recorded six COVID-related deaths and 3,023 new cases.

There are 298 people in hospital including 33 in intensive care and seven on ventilators.

SA Premier Steven Marshall said the fact that 6,906 people had recovered from COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, compared with the 3,023 new infections, was a further indication that the state was "at or about the peak".
"These numbers do bob around a bit but it is now significantly under our seven day average in South Australia," he said.

The state now has 31,582 active cases.

Mr Marshall said the number of SA Health staff in isolation had decreased significantly to 416 COVID-positive staff with 614 in total furloughed.

The government will announce more details on its return to schools plan today.

Mr Marshall said new modelling shows "no noticeable jump whatsoever" in case numbers was expected when schools return under the hybrid model of mixed face-to-face and remote learning for the first couple of weeks of term.
"There will be some additional cases, but it's not a noticeable jump," he said.

The ACT has had its equal deadliest day of the pandemic, with two new fatalities reported in the national capital. A man in his 60s and a man in his 90s died in the latest reporting period, taking the ACT's death toll since the start of the pandemic to 22.

It comes as the number of new infections in Canberra remained stable on Friday, with 826 cases reported.
Of those, 259 came from PCR tests while 567 were from rapid antigen tests.

Parents, TAS Teachers' Union & health experts question Tasmania's plan to send children back to school amid Delta + Omicron Wave in Tasmania.
Back-to-school plan 'almost impossible'
Ms Copeland welcomed the government's announcement that schools would individually contact parents, but she said she still had some concerns.
"I took some comfort from the fact that they are meeting and discussing the best way forward, and I think they are listening to medical advice, but I think a lot of the things that they are saying are difficult to implement in a school, in fact, they're almost impossible," she said.

Tasmanian Disability Education Reform Lobby founder Kristen Desmond said the plan to consult with each family was a good one, but she worried it would not be possible by February 9.
"The reality is we have more than 4,000 students with a disability in Tasmanian schools and no COVID plans are in place for these students in terms of their individual education plan or their medical plans," she said.
"That means schools have to contact more than 4,000 families [within three weeks].
"I just don't know [that] schools are going to be able to make all those phone calls.

Relief teacher pool 'exaggerated'
Under the state government's return-to-school plan, families will be sent a COVID-19 pack including two rapid antigen tests per child, and high school students will have to wear surgical masks.

Classrooms are being modified to make sure they are well ventilated and thousands of air purifiers are being installed.

Australian Education Union president David Genford said the plan was focused on "keeping schools open, even when they're not safe".
"It's going to be unsafe to be at school if cleaners are unable to come in and clean the school ... if you don't have enough first aid officers and it's going to be unsafe if you don't have enough teachers in the classrooms to take the classes that are there," he said.

Premier Peter Gutwein said there was a pool of 1,700 relief teachers ready to fill in if staff got sick and 400 recently retired teachers who were also ready to work. But Mr Genford said that number was highly inflated.
"You've got retired teachers that want to enjoy their retirement, that don't want to come back into an environment that isn't considered safe, especially for their age group," he said.
"I would love for them to reach out to those 1,700 people and see who is actually available for relief because we know from speaking to schools that that is not an accurate reflection of how many people we have available."

There were 432 new cases of COVID-19 recorded in the Northern Territory in the 24 hours to 8pm on 20 January 2022. Of these, 357 were positive cases from a Rapid Antigen Test.
This takes the number of active cases in the NT to about 3,570.

New cases recorded include:
• 5 cases in Wurrumiyanga. NT Health staff are in the community undertaking testing, contact tracing and providing vaccination.
• 5 cases in Jabiru
• 3 cases in Galiwin’ku
• 1 case in Yirrkala

Public health measures
To slow the spread of COVID-19 in our community and reduce the rate of transmission the following public health measures are in place across the NT:

• A lockout in Alice Springs, Yuendumu, Yuelamu and Amoonguna until 23 January
• A lockdown in Galiwin’ku until 24 January

COVID-19 school-based measures
A range of measures will be introduced in NT Government Schools to reduce the risk of COVID-19 and keep children and young people at school learning as much as possible.
These include:
• Air-conditioning systems in every government school have been audited to ensure they meet or exceed relevant standards for fresh air intake and circulation.
• 500 portable air purifiers will be provided to schools that don’t have central air conditioning systems. An additional 150 are on order.
• Students from Year 3 in primary school will be strongly encouraged to wear masks while indoors at school.
• Students at middle and senior schools will be required to wear a mask indoors when they can’t physically distance, in line with Chief Health Officer Directions.

COVID-19 testing
Remote school staff will be provided with three Rapid Antigen Tests upon their return to community and will be required to undertake testing on the day they enter the community and again on days 3 and 6.
From the beginning of term, all government school staff will be provided with three Rapid Antigen Tests a week to use as required and as an extra precaution.

COVID positive cases
All people including school staff and students who test positive for COVID-19 are required to undertake at least seven days isolation. For more information visit Coronvirus website.
Close contacts in schools
Primary school, pre-school child care
Children with any COVID-19 symptoms or who are unwell should not attend school, pre-school or child care.
Children who are a close contact and have no symptoms of COVID-19 can continue to attend school, pre-school and child care as normal. They are not required to get tested unless they have symptoms.
Middle school and senior school
Students in middle school or senior school who have COVID-19 symptoms or who are unwell should not attend.
Students in middle school or senior school who are a close contact and have no symptoms can continue to attend school if they have a negative Rapid Antigen Test before attending school for the week.
Parents and carers will be notified of any positive cases in the school and if students are a close contact. Students will be provided with Rapid Antigen Tests for the week at school.
School staff and childcare workers
School staff and child care workers who are essential workers and a close contact can attend work if they have no symptoms and have a negative Rapid Antigen Test result each day before attending work, for the week.

COVID-19 testing
Everyone should get tested for COVID-19 if showing symptoms. A number of NT Rapid Antigen Testing and Distribution Points have been established. Individuals can collect RATs for free from NT distribution centres located in Darwin, Katherine, Nhulunbuy, Alice Springs and Tennant Creek.

To reduce the risk of COVID-19 spreading in our communities, it is important for everyone to follow all the health directions:
• Book your COVID-19 vaccine
• Check in using The Territory Check In App every time, everywhere
• If you have symptoms, stay away from others and get tested for COVID-19
• Wash your hands with soap and water and use hand sanitiser regularly
• Do not go to work if you feel sick
• Maintain a physical distance of 1.5 metres where possible.

Of people aged 5 to 11, 24.1 % have received a first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

Of the 30 people who died;
1 person was aged in their 50s,

There were 576 new cases of COVID-19 reported in the Mid North Coast Local Health District to 8pm yesterday (21 January 2022) – including 304 positive rapid antigen tests (RATs) and 272 positive PCR tests*.

Mid North Coast Health is reporting the deaths of 3 people with COVID-19
– 2 from Coffs Harbour LGA
and 1 from Port Macquarie-Hastings LGA.
2 of these deaths were reported in NSW Health figures yesterday.

Of the 272 positive PCR tests,
94 are from Coffs Harbour Local Government Area (LGA),
77 are from Port Macquarie-Hastings LGA,
75 are from Kempsey LGA,
22 are from Nambucca Valley LGA
and 4 are from Bellingen LGA.

There are 57 COVID-19 cases in Mid North Coast hospitals, with three people in intensive care.

Three hundred and sixteen (316) new COVID-19 cases have been confirmed in Southern NSW today - 167 cases were detected by PCR tests and 149 cases were detected by RAT tests.

Victoria's Covid infections have dropped with 16,016 new cases and 20 deaths announced on Saturday.
In Victoria there are 1,029 residents in hospital, a drop from 1,096 on Friday. There are 120 Victorians in intensive care, one fewer than the previous day.

Victorians may soon have to be triple-vaccinated to enter cafes or restaurants.

Star West Coast forward Jack Darling has been forced to train away from the club and his teammates after failing to meet the AFL's COVID-19 protocols.
The AFL's policy states that all players and staff at both Western Australian clubs, West Coast and Fremantle, must have received two doses of COVID-19 vaccination by January 21 to be allowed to continue attending the headquarters.

WA COVID-19 update 22 January 2022
Anyone in the Perth, Peel and the South West regions experiencing symptoms should get tested immediately and isolate until they receive a negative result. This applies to anyone symptomatic – even if you have not visited a listed exposure site.
A full list of testing clinics is available on HealthyWA website.

WA Health has reported 7 new local COVID-19 cases and 4 INTERSTATE travel-related cases to 8pm last night.

5 of the seven local cases are known contacts of a previously reported cases, 1 who was potentially infectious in the community.

The 2 other local cases are currently being investigated. They have not currently been linked directly to any previous cases. These 2 cases are from different households.
All cases are in self-quarantine now and public health will continue to monitor them.

Contact tracers are now working with these cases to determine potential exposure sites and these will be uploaded to the HealthyWA website when confirmed.

Exposure sites
WA Health’s contact tracing team continues to identify a new range of exposure sites linked to new cases and it is likely exposure sites will be updated or added. Please continue to check exposure sites regularly, these are listed on the HealthyWA website.

Testing advice
People are urged to continue to check the exposure sites page of the HealthyWA website for updates, and if they have been to an exposure site to follow the listed health advice.

5,764 Western Australians were swabbed at clinics yesterday.

Private clinics are also available. Testing is available free of charge at private testing clinics for people who have been advised by WA Health to get tested, or who have been present at exposure sites at the times listed on the HealthyWA website.

Vessels
WA Health is closely monitoring two vessels off the WA coast, both reporting probable COVID cases on board through returned positive Rapid Antigen Tests.
All positive crew members on board these vessels are isolating in their cabins and being monitored safely.

SafeWA
Yesterday, 2,151,681 scans were recorded on the SafeWA app. This represents an 3.4 per cent increase in usage from the previous day.
It is increasingly important for everyone to check in when they visit businesses in WA. Using SafeWA or the ServiceWA app will help authorities contact those who may be at risk quickly and effectively.
Other information

There are currently 78 confirmed active cases in WA.
Of these, 27 are in hotel quarantine, 51 are in self-quarantine. No cases are currently in hospital.

Today’s 11 new cases bring the State’s total number of COVID-19 cases to 1359.

COVID-19 vaccinations
Yesterday, 11,639 COVID-19 vaccinations were administered in State-run vaccination clinics in Western Australia.

Anyone who received their second dose of a COVID-19 vaccine four or more months ago can now book their booster dose and ensure they have maximum protection against the disease.
Additional appointments for children aged 5 to 11 have been added at State-run clinics between January 22 and January 30, these can be booked online at VaccinateWA.
A dedicated paediatric vaccination clinic will also open at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre (PCEC) and increased children's vaccinations will be available at Kwinana and Ellenbrook vaccination clinics. All other appointments booked at the PCEC clinic will continue as scheduled.

South Australia has posted a major decline in COVID-19 cases, with 2193 new infections or almost a third fewer than on Friday.

However the state has recorded a further 3 virus-related deaths.

Health officials say the latest fatalities were
a woman in her 30s,
another in her 80s
and one in her 90s.

South Australia is currently managing 33,892 active cases.

There are 276 people with COVID-19 in hospital, 37 of them in intensive care and 7 requiring a ventilator.

Of those hospitalised,
161 people are fully vaccinated,
44 are either unvaccinated or partially so
and 71 have an unknown status.

Some 90.2 % of South Australians aged 12 or over are double vaccinated while more than 452,440 booster shots have been issued, more than 18,000 of them in the past 24 hours.

Premier Steven Marshall says the state may have reached the peak of its Omicron-fuelled outbreak.

Tasmania has suffered its second COVID-related death since the borders reopened in December.

Health Minister Jeremy Rockliff said the person, who was admitted to the Mersey Community Hospital on Thursday, "did have a range of medical conditions" and was "extremely unwell" when hospitalised.
"My understanding is that the person was not vaccinated," he said.

Yesterday, the state recorded its first COVID-related death since the reopening.

The state recorded 31 COVID-19 hospitalisations and 726 new cases.
2 patients are in ICU as the state's total of active cases reached 5,746.

Of the total cases, 251 were identified through a rapid antigen test, and 475 through a PCR swab.

In the past 24 hours, 964 patients have been released from quarantine.

Meanwhile, the state's north is grappling with an outbreak at the Mersey Community Hospital as nine patients and two staff members tested positive to the virus.

Mr Gutwein yesterday said tracing the source of the outbreak was still continuing, but the first detected case was in a patient in a ward at the hospital.

One of the cases has been transferred to intensive care at Launceston General Hospital.

The state government says it has put in place a plan that allows students to return to school safely.
"We have RATs, we have PPE on supply. We're well resourced in that particular matter, well resourced in terms of hand hygiene as well," Mr Rockliff said.

The government has now confirmed Education Minister Sarah Courtney is overseas.

She will be back at work two days before students return to classrooms on February 9.

Opposition education spokesman Josh Willie said Premier Peter Gutwein should call her back.
"I find it absolutely perplexing that the Minister for Education is overseas on a holiday when our school staff are trying to prepare for the most unsettling start to the school year in living memory," Mr Willie said.
"We need to have an Education Minister at this critically important time being available to make decisions and implement a schools plan so that Tasmanian children can continue their education."

In a lockout, those people who are fully vaccinated are able to live normally and access all services with proof of their vaccination status.

Those who are unvaccinated, including people who have received only their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, must stay at home for the lockout period and are only permitted to leave for the following reasons:

New Zealand will make household contacts of Covid cases isolate for 24 days under harsh new rules brought in to combat an impending Omicron outbreak.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has brought in the strict measures as the country battles to stay Covid Zero despite the threat of the highly contagious mutant strain.

Anyone infected with Covid is now required to isolate for 14 days, up from 10 days under the new interim rules.

Household contacts must then stay in quarantine for a further 10 days, stretching the time alone out to three and a half weeks.

The extension to isolation comes as New Zealand recorded 84 new Covid cases on Saturday, with 43 in the community and another 41 caught at the border.
It includes an Auckland airport worker who tested positive for the omicron strain, sparking fears case numbers could soar up to 1500 a day or more if the mutant strain spreads across the nation.

The NZ Ministry of Health said the changes were made after new scientific data published in Japan revealed the highly infectious strain has a longer incubation period than previous variants with sufferers also shedding the virus for longer.

However experts say the change is the government doing a U-turn on a a decision to shorten isolation time made last November.

'This is not new - we've just gone back to the time periods we had before that change a couple of months ago,' epidemiologist Michael Baker said.

'Our management of the virus is still to keep Omicron out and we've got to have tougher rules to do that.

'But everything is going to change when the almost inevitable outbreak occurs here.'
