NSW Health confirm a traveler has been infected with the Omicron , bringing the total number of cases to 8 in NSW.

The Omicron variant was identified by NSW Health following ongoing genomic sequencing of confirmed COVID-19 cases who have recently returned from overseas.
The person arrived on flight QR908 from Doha to Sydney on 23 November. The person is isolating in the Special Health Accommodation with their family. Two other members of their household are confirmed cases of COVID-19 and urgent genomic sequencing is underway to confirm they have also been infected with the Omicron COVID-19 variant.
The newest case is an infant .

2 of the cases are interstate travellers, while 16 are linked to the Norwood cluster. Professor Spurrier said so far, 210 close contacts were in quarantine in South Australia. "That number is likely to increase," she said. She said cases had emerged in vulnerable locations such as schools and hospitals.
South Australian Premier Steven Marshall has said NSW arrivals will have to be tested on arrival as of "later this afternoon". "We remain very concerned about the Omicron variant," he said.
Chief Public Health Officer Professor Nicola Spurrier said the 18 new cases in the state were all expected to be of the Delta variant.
While Premier Steven Marshall said this was in line with expectations, he said there were "concerns" over the Omicron variant.

NT has recorded one new case of Delta linked to the Katherine region cluster in the past 24 hours.
That case is a 45-year-old man from the remote community of Lajamanu, about 560 kilometres south-west of Katherine. He is fully vaccinated.
It is the first case to be recorded in Lajamanu, which went into lockdown on Saturday after wastewater samples tested positive to COVID-19.
Lockdown orders were lifted in Lajamanu yesterday and Health Minister Natasha Fyles said the community would remain under lockout rules only.
Ms Fyles said the man would be transferred to the Howard Springs COVID quarantine facility near Darwin.
He has 13 close contacts, who will also be transported to the centre.
Binjari, near Katherine, will be moved from a hard lockdown to a standard lockdown after 147 COVID-19 tests from the community came back negative.
Wastewater samples from the community are also now testing negative to Delta. "We still need the residents of Binjari to stay in their community, but they can have a little more freedom to try [to] get to the store and look after themselves," Ms Fyles said.
The minister said a fourth round of testing would be done in Binjari today.

NSW Health is investigating an outbreak of COVID-19 cases at Regents Park Christian School in western Sydney. There is now a total of 13 COVID-19 cases linked to this cluster.
As already announced,1 case has been confirmed as being the Omicron variant and is DEFINITELY A LOCAL TRANSMISSION of Omicron.( an under 12yo child who is unvaxxed [ under 12yos are not eligible yet in NSW ] ).
Genomic sequencing has confirmed 2 more cases are also the Omicron variant. Urgent genome testing is underway on a further 10 cases.

NSW Health is urgently investigating the source of infection for this cluster.
The whole school K-12 has now been dismissed for the year. All students and staff have been identified as close contacts. They must get tested and self-isolate for 2 weeks.

ACT Health has confirmed an Omicron infection in the territory, in an individual who has not travelled overseas. ( Australia's 2nd known local Omicron transmission ).
The person is fully vaccinated and returned a positive COVID-19 test on Wednesday December 1.
Following genome sequencing, the case was today confirmed as the Omicron variant. It is not yet known if the case was acquired in the ACT or NSW. Contact tracing is underway in ACT & NSW to work this out.

SA Health is boosting COVID testing in Adelaide's southern suburbs after a mystery infection was one of four new cases reported today.
SA Health said the mystery case spent time in the Port Noarlunga region, and has urged anyone in the area to get tested if they have any symptoms and isolate until they receive a negative result.
2 of the cases are interstate travellers and the 4 case, who attended the high school reunion super-spreader event in Norwood, is under investigation to determine if they caught their infection interstate or in South Australia.
The cases include 3 men aged between 20 and 70, and 1 woman in her thirties who tested positive after travelling to the Northern Territory.
That case prompted the Territory to impose seven days of home quarantine for all travellers from South Australia.

The Northern Territory has recorded two new cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours. These include:
• A male who arrived from Melbourne on 29 November and was in home quarantine with three other family members has tested positive for COVID-19. He is symptomatic and he and his family have been transferred to the Centre for National Resilience (CNR).
• A female who arrived on Jetstar flight JQ 692 from Adelaide on 2 December has tested positive for COVID-19. Contact tracing is underway. She and the two family members she was travelling with transited directly from the airport to the CNR.
These cases are not connected to the NT outbreak, with the total number remaining at 60.
There are currently 226 active close contacts for cluster two. Of those, all have been contacted and are isolating, and 208 have returned a negative test.
More than 2,700 COVID-19 tests were processed across the NT yesterday.
Wastewater testing results for the Bicentennial Road catchment site in Katherine remain positive. There have been no other unexpected positive wastewater testing results across the NT.

The rules were brought in amid speculation the border could be slammed shut to stem the spread of the variant,

5 December OMICRON in AUSTRALIA.

NSW Health is continuing to investigate an outbreak of COVID-19 cases with the Omicron variant at Regents Park Christian School, Sydney Indoor Climbing Gym Villawood, and St Peter Chanel Catholic Primary School in Regents Park.
There have now been five cases confirmed as being the Omicron variant of concern linked to these venues in addition to a confirmed case in the ACT who likely acquired their infection at the Sydney Indoor Climbing Gym Villawood. Genome sequencing is currently underway on a number of other COVID-19 cases linked to these settings.
One of the confirmed Omicron cases is a student at St Peter Chanel Catholic Primary School in Regents Park who attended the Sydney Indoor Climbing Gym in Villawood on Saturday November 27.
All year three and year four students and teachers at St Peter Chanel Catholic Primary School have been deemed close contacts and asked to self-isolate. Contact tracing and genome sequencing is underway on several cases of COVID-19 identified in the school community.
Anyone who attended the Sydney Indoor Climbing Gym on Saturday 27 November between 9am and 4.30pm is a close contact who must immediately get tested and isolate according to NSW Health guidelines. People should continue to monitor for symptoms and if any symptoms occur, get tested.
To date, there have been no cases with the Omicron variant admitted to hospital in NSW for treatment of COVID-19.
Testing has shown that there are now a total of 15 cases of COVID-19 with the Omicron variant in New South Wales.Total: 15 confirmed cases.
NSW Health has also found the ACT's first Omicron case, announced on Friday, likely acquired their infection at the Sydney Indoor Climbing Gym Villawood.

There are growing fears of an Covid superspreader event in Parliament House after a Greens staffer tested positive for the virus.
Federal Greens leader Adam Bandt confirmed he and his party are isolating on Sunday morning after the positive case worked in Parliament House between November 30 and December 2.
ACT and Federal Health Officials are now scrambling to determine whether the person was infectious in the community in Canberra.

The Greens leader confirmed his fully-vaccinated staffer had tested positive in a statement on Saturday night. 'A fully vaccinated member on Adam Bandt's team, who was in Canberra during the last sitting week, has tested positive to COVID,' Mr Bandt's office said.

The source of this cluster is believed to be a returned overseas traveller, who arrived in Sydney from Doha on flight QR908 on 23 November. This person had spent time in Nigeria.
The total number of Omicron cases in NSW acquired either overseas or on an international flight is 11.

ACT OMICRON

There are now five cases of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 in the ACT, with one of the new cases forcing about 180 people linked to Lyneham Primary School into quarantine.

3 more infections of the variant were confirmed yesterday — two are household contacts of the earlier cases and one is a casual contact — bringing the case total to five.

ACT Health said one of the cases had attended the inner north school on November 30 and December 1, sending 180 people into quarantine for 14 days, according to rules adjusted by ACT Health after the new variant was detected in the territory.

In an email to parents, carers and staff of Lyneham Primary School, ACT Health said all year 1 and 2 students who were at school on the two dates have to quarantine.

All students who attended before school care, and any year 2-6 students who attended after school care, on those dates, also have to quarantine.
"All household members of the close contact are also required to quarantine together with the close contact," the email said.

Genomic sequencing is underway to determine whether an international traveller who landed in Melbourne last week might be infected with the Omicron strain of COVID-19.

The traveller, who is fully vaccinated, went straight into hotel quarantine after arriving in Victoria from the Netherlands, via Abu Dhabi, on December 3.
The person returned a negative PCR test on December 4 before developing symptoms and testing positive for the virus on December 6.
Health authorities said the test results had shown an S gene dropout in the virus, a sign a person could be infected with Omicron, according to the World Health Organisation. "Several labs have indicated that for one widely used PCR test, one of the three target genes is not detected — called S gene dropout or S gene target failure - and this test can therefore be used as marker for this variant, pending sequencing confirmation," the WHO said on November 26.
Health authorities said other passengers on the inbound flight would be contacted to make sure they have been tested for the virus, as contact tracers try to determine the source of the infection.

A woman in her 90s from western Sydney died at Westmead Hospital. She was a resident of the Blacktown Terrace Care Community aged care facility, where she acquired her infection. She had received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine and had underlying health conditions. Her death is the first death linked to an outbreak at this facility.

Victorian health authorities have recorded the state’s first case of the Omicron variant.
The Department of Health confirmed they had commenced genomic sequencing to test an infected overseas arrival in hotel quarantine on Tuesday.
Authorities officially confirmed the traveller was infected with the Omicron variant on Wednesday.
Following whole genomic sequencing, the case in Hotel Quarantine reported yesterday has been confirmed as having the Omicron variant,” the department said.
Concerns are also growing over two additional “likely” Omicron cases recently detected in the Victorian community.
“Two cases have returned results with S gene dropout – a signature of the Omicron variant,” the department said.
“None of these cases are linked to international travel and their source of acquisition is under investigation.”
The two suspected cases are located in the outer Melbourne cities of Casey and Brimbank.
The fully-vaccinated traveller who tested positive for Omicron on Wednesday arrived from the Netherlands via Abu Dhabi on December 3.

They immediately entered hotel quarantine upon arrival in Melbourne and have not been in the community while infectious.
“The source of acquisition remains under investigation,” the department said.
“All other passengers on the inbound flight will be assessed to ensure they have undergone a test.”
The infected traveller initially returned a negative PCR test on December 4, but suddenly became symptomatic on December 6.
They then returned a positive test with the finding of an S gene dropout – a mutation seen in the Omicron variant of the coronavirus.
By Wednesday afternoon, genomic sequencing confirmed the traveller was infected with the new variant.

There are now five cases of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 in the ACT, with one of the new cases forcing about 180 people linked to Lyneham Primary School into quarantine.

Three more infections of the variant were confirmed yesterday — two are household contacts of the earlier cases and one is a casual contact — bringing the case total to five.

ACT Health said one of the cases had attended the inner north school on November 30 and December 1, sending 180 people into quarantine for 14 days, according to rules adjusted by ACT Health after the new variant was detected in the territory.

In an email to parents, carers and staff of Lyneham Primary School, ACT Health said all year 1 and 2 students who were at school on the two dates have to quarantine.

All students who attended before school care, and any year 2-6 students who attended after school care, on those dates, also have to quarantine.

"All household members of the close contact are also required to quarantine together with the close contact," the email said.

Genomic sequencing is underway to determine whether an international traveller who landed in Melbourne last week might be infected with the Omicron strain of COVID-19.
The traveller, who is fully vaccinated, went straight into hotel quarantine after arriving in Victoria from the Netherlands, via Abu Dhabi, on December 3.
The person returned a negative PCR test on December 4 before developing symptoms and testing positive for the virus on December 6.
Health authorities said the test results had shown an S gene dropout in the virus, a sign a person could be infected with Omicron, according to the World Health Organisation. "Several labs have indicated that for one widely used PCR test, one of the three target genes is not detected — called S gene dropout or S gene target failure - and this test can therefore be used as marker for this variant, pending sequencing confirmation," the WHO said on November 26.
Health authorities said other passengers on the inbound flight would be contacted to make sure they have been tested for the virus, as contact tracers try to determine the source of the infection.

NSW recorded 403 new cases of COVID-19 in the 24 hours to 8pm last night. There is now a total of 34 cases of COVID-19 with the Omicron variant in NSW.

NSW has not reported more than 400 cases in a day since mid-October 2021. Recently the virus has spread among vaccinated people at a range of indoor settings, where people are socialising, including pubs, nightclubs & parties. The vaccine is effective at protecting against severe disease, but while the risk of transmission is reduced, spread can still occur among fully vaccinated people.

NSW Health is today reporting the death of a man in his 80s from south-western Syd at Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital. He was a resident of Bankstown City Aged Care Gillawarna Village. He had received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine and had underlying health conditions. NSW Health expresses its sincere condolences to his loved ones.

The Sydney Local Health District advised late today that 44 people have tested positive to COVID-19 after attending a trivia night at Petersham in the city’s inner west. It is not yet clear if attendees have the highly transmissible Omicron variant of the virus or the Delta strain.
People who were at the Oxford Tavern at 1 Canterbury Road between 4pm and 10.30pm on Tuesday, November 30, are considered close contacts and must get tested immediately for the virus and self-isolate.

Mary Ward reports that there are now 34 cases of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 detected in NSW, after genomic sequencing confirmed three additional cases in the state. The cases include one locally acquired case linked to the south-west Sydney cluster, which now stands at 21, and two cases in recently arrived overseas travelers.
As Sarah McPhee reported earlier today, health authorities were awaiting final sequencing results for two other cases who attended a cruise on Sydney Harbour on Friday.
These cases’ preliminary results show they have been infected with the Omicron variant. The pair are among five virus cases detected among attendees at a 90s-themed boat party which departed King Street Wharf on Friday, December 3 at 7.30pm and returned around 11pm. Public health officials were urgently contacting 140 attendees at the party, directing them to test and self-isolate.
