PNG

Papua New Guinea authorities have approved a mass burial to take pressure off Port Moresby's hospital morgue where bodies are stacked on top of each other as COVID-19 cases surge.
National Pandemic Response Controller David Manning has authorised the burial of 200 bodies out of more than 300 at the morgue which was built to cater for only 60.

National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop said refrigerated containers had been installed to store more bodies and a mass burial was planned for this week.

Port Moresby General Hospital CEO Paki Molumi said the names of the dead to be buried would be advertised in the city's newspapers and relatives had 72 hours to claim the bodies.

The PNG capital is bracing meanwhile for a possible lockdown this week to try to reduce coronavirus cases and deaths in a city where 99 % of COVID cases admitted to the general hospital are unvaccinated.

National health board deputy chairman Mathias Sapuri said a two-week lockdown across PNG was the only way to control the Covid-19 surge.

"The virus stops moving when people stop moving," he said.

Governor Parkop earlier this month said he would oppose any further lockdowns in Port Moresby because of the costs of previous ones but the latest surge in cases appears to have changed his mind.

"If the doctors tell me that we have to lock down because they cannot cope any more, then I will follow their advice," he told The National.

Other regions in PNG have already imposed lockdowns and curfews in a bid to curb the spread of coronavirus in a country where less than one per cent of the population has been fully vaccinated.

PNG has officially confirmed 26,731 coronavirus cases and 329 deaths but it's believed many more cases and deaths are going unreported in the nation of nine million where vaccination hesitancy is reported to be high.

Of the 90 community cases identified by health officials on Thursday, these include 2 in Christchurch, ending a 358-day run without the virus for the South Island's biggest city.

The New Zealand government has opted against sending the city into lockdown, with Mr Hipkins saying there were 'no major exposure events'.
'Close contacts have been identified and are self-isolating ... we'll continue to closely monitor the situation,' he said.

Sadly, a man in his 60s died with COVID-19 in John Hunter Hospital. He had received one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and had underlying
health conditions.
The death was announced yesterday by NSW Health.

24 cases are linked, 9 are unlinked, 2 are still under investigation.

22 were infectious in the community. 11 were isolating while infectious. 2 are still under investigation.

Up to 8pm last night there were 13 new cases identified in the Western NSW Local Health District, in the following areas:

NSW Health is reporting the deaths of four people – 2 women and 2 men.

One person was in their 30s, 1 person was in their 70s, and 2 people were in their 80s.
Two people were from south western Sydney, one person was from western Sydney and one person was from the Shellharbour area.
Two people were not vaccinated and two people – both in their 80s and with underlying health conditions – had received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine.
A 38-year-old woman from western Sydney died at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. She was not vaccinated and had underlying health conditions.There have been 526 COVID-19 related deaths in NSW since 16 June 2021

NSW recorded a surge up to 308 local cases , zero mystery cases reported , bringing NSW's total to 71325 in 141 days .

To 11:59pm on Tuesday 2 November 2021 across NSW, 93.7 % of people aged 16 and over had received a first dose of COVID-19 vaccine, and 88.7 % were fully vaccinated.
In the 12-15 year old age group, 79.6 % have had their first dose, and 65.1 % are fully vaccinated.

The total number of vaccines administered in NSW is now 12,419,927 with 4,073,650 doses administered by NSW Health to 8pm last night and 8,346,277 administered by the GP network, pharmacies and other providers to 11:59pm on Tuesday 2nd November 2021.

92.% of Victorians aged 12 and over have now had at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and 81.1 % have had two doses.

4 November BREAKING NEWS from NT.

NT has recorded their FIRST EVER local covid transmitting , a Katherine resident has tested covid positive tonight , as a result Katherine & Dawrin LHAs have gone into a Stage 4 Circuit Breaker Lockdown for at least 3 days .

NT's first case of COVID community transmission sends Katherine into lockdown, Greater Darwin into lockout​

The Northern Territory has recorded its first ever case of COVID-19 community transmission, prompting a three-day lockdown in the Katherine area from midnight.

It follows an unvaccinated man in his 20s testing positive after spending time in the community in Darwin's rural area and Katherine.

Katherine residents will only be permitted to leave their homes for five reasons.

The case also means Greater Darwin, including Palmerston and the rural area, will enter the Territory's first "lockout" for the next 72 hours.

Under the lockout, fully vaccinated people will be required to wear a mask when outdoors but can otherwise continue life as normal.

However, unvaccinated people will be subject to full lockdown restrictions, including only being able to leave their home for five reasons.

People in the lockout area, once inside, will not be permitted to leave other than for essential work or to fly interstate.

Chief Minister Michael Gunner announced the new measures at an emergency press conference held about 10pm on Thursday.
