We picked up a very nice 2-1/2 year old along with a 10 gallon set up yesterday.
I've been reading a lot of care sheets on line and have a couple questions for
you:

1. Lighting/heating: I understand that 82-88 F is ideal for the warm side. Some
sites say to use a UTH with no light, some sites say to only use lights, and
some say to use both. Ours came with both, but she was only using the light. Our
house is cooler than hers, so I was only getting 78 F with the small 75W basking
light she had. I removed the light and used the UTH only and am getting about 88 F.

Do I need to use a light or is the UTH ok by itself?

2. Substrate: She has crushed walnut shells which I know to get out of there
ASAP! Most sites say play sand is ok, but some say to use no loose substrate at
all because of the risk of it being ingested and impaction. I don't really want
to use paper towels or newspaper. I was thinking of either sand or tile?

What do you think?

3. Hides: Most sites say to have a hide on both the warm and cool sides. Some
say to make the hide on the cool side have a moistened moss to aid in shedding.

With so little room in the 10 gallon size, what do you recommend? (she only has
a hide on the warm side now)

4. Supplementation: I know to use calcium with D3 2-3 times/week and vitamins
once/week (same as BD's). Some sites sites say to keep a small dish of calcium
w/o D3 for them to lick when needed. Do I need this? Is a cap from a 2 liter
bottle big enough?

5. Water dish: The lady has one of those big automatic water dishes in there now
taking up almost half of the floorspace. It seems way overkill to me.

Am I fine with just a small dish of water? Is a cap from a 2 liter bottle big
enough?

6. Feeding: Some sites seem to say crickets, some say crickets and mealworms,
and some say just mealworms are fine. I've gotten away from crickets with Max
(our BD) because I hate dealing with them.

Am I ok with just mealworms? (I would occasionally get some Phoenix Worms and
Silkworms too since I get them for Max sometimes.)

Are Supers ok for an adult Leopard Gecko? (I usually feed max Super Worms.)
(I know the old myth of them chewing through their stomachs is BS)

Looking for your recommendations.

Thank you,

Frank

Okay, lot of questions. No problem.

I do not use a light, and have never encountered any problems. I, frankly, see no need for them or any interest in spending money on them.

I recommend the tile, or reptile carpet, what I use. I don't like dealing with loose substrate and I dont feel comfortable using it, dont like risking anything with my dearies :D

As for hides, I always have at least one on each side. One is a warm hide, like you already have, but the other is not just a cool hide, it is a humid hide. Meaning, you should have moss or something to keep it humid for proper shedding.

I always keep a calcium dish in there for my geckos and they do use it (you may never see them using it but they do use it). They will use it if they need to. A two liter bottle cap is fine, just make sure to keep it full of fresh calcium.

I use a small water dish, but not that small. If you are good and check it at least once a day, for one gecko it should be fine. I just worry about it evaporating quickly.

As for food, I feed mine mealworms all the time, sometimes as a main food, no problems. Sometimes though they have butterworms as the main food. I sometimes go to the pet store and get them crickets for variety. I order hornworms (the 25 count cups from Great Lakes Hornworm- they are perfect sized for leopard geckos), phoenix worms, and silkworms for them (and my beardie of course :D ) sometimes for variety, and give them waxworms for treats. Ive never fed them supers before, so I cant say.

Congrats on the new gecko!

Hope that helps...

Frog: Thank you for taking the time to help me with our new little guys set up.

I called the breeder we got our BD from yesterday, who also breeds all kinds of gecko's, http://www.crestedgecko.com and he gave me mostly the same advice.

After checking my temps further, with paper towel as the current substrate and the heat mat underneath with no lights, it is about 97 F inside of his hide which is over the heat mat. When I checked the surrounding temps throughout the rest of the tank, I found that they were only around 72 F. :( Since I'm not lucky enough to be in a warm environment like you are :blob5: we keep our house at 68 F when we are home, 66 F at night, and 63 F when we're gone. The breeder recommended that since our 10 gallon tank is so small, we should be fine with using one larger hide with moistened moss inside and have 1/2 of it over the heat mat and 1/2 of it not over the heat mat. He did say to try not to have the hot side of the hide over the heat mat get above 90 F, so I will probably by a rheostat for the UTH so I can adjust the heat output. He did say that I need to get the surrounding tank temps up to around 80 F, so he suggested using a blue or red nocturnal bulb to add the needed heat. He said the same as you did, that they don't need added white light, and that it would probably just stress him out and keep him inside his dark hide more. I experimented last night using a regular 75 W bulb (the highest the little light fixture is rated for) and the surrounding tank temps got up to about 80 F, so I'm going to get a couple nocturnal bulbs. (75W for now and then lesser wattages down to none as we move through spring into summer. Our temps in WI very a lot throughout the year!)

Here is the hide I'm going to get:

I'm not sure what I'm going to use for the substrate, because I want to wait until I get the hide to see how well it conducts heat up from the heat mat. I'm leaning towards using tile, slate, vinyl tile, or maybe non-adhesive shelf liner. No matter what, it won't be a loose substrate that can risk impaction if ingested. :D

I'm thinking of getting this hide to put on the cool side, but I'll have to wait and see if I have room for it:

I agree with you on the feeding...variety is the spice of life. The breeder said that supers are fine for adult Leo's. He said he uses them with his. This would be nice since I use supers for our BD's staple.

If anyone else has any comments or suggestions, please let me know.

Sounds good. I'm glad I gave good advice. It's all based mainly on my own experience, and what I've read.

Maybe I will start using supers for my geckos. They can be kept in the fridge right?

Thanks :D

I saw the pic of the beetles... :bleick:

Once, a mealworm got under my dragons hide (I dont feed those anymore) and it morphed into a beetle. I lifted the rock thing and it started crawling away, I freaked out, and Bengal ran over, tongue out, and ate it!! EWW. at least I didnt have to grab it

I've had superworms last almost a year and they've never turned into beatles.

Our BD Max has been on a eating strike for 6+ weeks now, so at least I can feed off the last few to our new Leopard Gecko!

Max was sleeping on and off throughout the day for awhile, but lately he has been up and running around most all day. It's like he's more active, but still won't eat. This is our first year with Max being old enough to brumate or whatever you'd call what he's doing, so of course we are worried all the time. Hopefully he'll come out of this soon and start chowing down as spring gets closer!

I posted pictures and video in a topic I had about Max before using Photobucket, but I'll have to try and remember how all that works so I can put a picture of our new Leopard Gecko here for you to see. I'll need to wait until we get our new internet installed at home because I will not attempt it with our "in between isp dial up acct".

Bengal is dead asleep, not gotten up once (not counting when I bathe him).

I hope you manage to get some pics!

Well, the two leo's I got from petco look the same. Im not sure if they are normal or carrot tails. They have some orange on there tails that make me think they may be carrot tails, but Im not sure. They are yellow with spots on part of their bodies. They have beautiful tails, with orange on a part of them.

My 'rescue' gecko you could say (I got her from a friend when her dad told her if I would take her she had to give her to me- he said that when he found out I had geckos too. I guess he figured I could take better care of her. She is better than she was when I got her, I have to admit) she is normal. Yellow with spots.

My rescue has some skeletal issue or something. Her back is crooked, her legs are a little different and she doesnt have claws. Just little stub toes. Maybe that is from improper shedding and she always had little pieces of shed on them and she bit them. Not sure. She sometimes has a little trouble grabbing food, and she cant move around as fast as Gomez and Orion but she lives a normal life and is perfectly healthy and happily lives with Gomez (Im pretty sure Gomez is a she- I had the name decided before I got him, hehe. (s)he was my first gecko. And my favorite, if I had to choose). I have no idea what is wrong with her exactly but she is healthy and thats all that matters.

Here I am blabbing on and on
I do that a lot...

BTW- about your gecko.....

has he eaten at all? He may still be settling in. What are you offering it to eat? Just supers? maybe try some waxworms or some hornworms. They are both VERY popular with my geckos. Especially the hornworms

a poem by AHBD (THANK YOU SO MUCH! I LOVE IT!)

Sir Henry the dragon
Looking for his dragon girl
Ventures out in to the wide world
His hopes are up but as you can see
There is no dragon girl for Sir Henry
A light bulb goes off and he takes mom aside
Could you perchance get me a mail order bride ?
