beardie parents

I have never used a Cheramic Heat Emitter before because I've never needed it. The beardies I had then always slept in a box and I used the blue night light by exo Terra. Since Speedy and Zoom Zoom don't seem to want to sleep in a hide of any kind. For this reason I ordered 2 CHE's, one is a 60 watt and the other is a 40 watt. I opened one and noticed the directions said I needed one of their special clamp lamps to put the CHE into or it would risk a fire.
Have I wasted $40.00 on these? I bought a 250 watt lamp that doesn't have an on/off switch or a clamp. Would that work for it? The directions had a picture of the clamp lamp and it doesn't look anything like the ones I have, except for the clamp part.
I would really appreciate any information anyone can give me. I have noticed that any lights that are on in our bedroom, where their vivs are, disturbed Speedy and we need to cover the sides of her viv so she doesn't see the night lights that we have on.
I know I don't need this, but, in my area sometimes it's not cold enough for them to need the CHE until say one or two am. Should I get a gizmo to turn it on when it gets to a certain temp? My husband usually wakes up, but I would like some form of backup that will see to it that they don't get to cold as it's only going to get colder as the year draws quickly to a close.
