I have a t8 10.0 reptisun in a all living things fixture on top of the metal (not mesh, but circles, and theyre pretty big) so i know it cant block out the uvb, can i leave it sitting ontop? Its about 7"-6" away from the basking spot. I dont see a need to mount it inside then i run the risk of him jumping on it and hurting himself ( he's about 2 months) opinions please?
I dont think i can because of how high the rock is he'd probably hit it , is it even acceptable on the top not far from the basking rock? If i absolutely have to i will mount it inside
What size is your tank? It sounds small like a 20g with that kind of clearance. If so, a T8 is OK on top but I'd get the basking area 6'' or so from the bulb. You'll need a larger tank soon though and using a T5 with that is a good idea.

A 40g breeder is a good size for a young dragon. That should be 36''x18''x18''. I would get a 22'' T5 and put it on top and adjust the basking spot so that it's no closer than about 10'' from the bulb. You can set it to one side (next to the basking light) so there are plenty of spots further away to offer choices. A T8 isn't really powerful enough to be a good option in the long run and a 40g breeder can certainly handle a T5.
