Just changed out bulbs from a day white light spot 50w to a 75w repti basking spot lamp.
My beardie is young, 5 1/2 inches long.
It's on the wood dorm with it's mouth open. First time Zeld is doing this.
Before, Zeld would lay down on the wood.
The temperature is reading 101.5F now.
The day white was only staying around 80-82F.
Just wondering if having the mouth open is normal?
Thanks!
As Destiny pointed out, this is how they exhaust heat. They can't sweat like humans so to lower their body temperature down when they are basking they will sit there gaping.
To make sure you're getting accurate temp readings, can you fill us in on the type of thermometer you're using and where exactly you're taking the temps? Also, what size tank is it? What brand & type of UVB are you using?
If you're using any type of stick-on thermometer like a digital strip or round gauge (dial) type, your beardie could be over heating & that is the reason for the gaping. The stick-ons can be off as much as 20 degrees or more. Over heating is VERY dangerous to a baby beardie which can actually cause rapid dehydration and heat stroke.
Please help us help you by filling us in on the thermometer and the type of UVB you have.
