Is this hornworm dead??? (Pic included)

I just got this cup of hornworms from Petco yesterday. Never had them before. I just checked on them and one of them is hanging from a piece(?) of itself and it has turned dark. I read that these guys turn into pupas underground or something so I'm trying to figure out if it's dead or what. Thank you in advance. (Picture is gross btw)View media item 19455
