so i bought my first beardie yesterday a lil guy about 6 inches, and i put him in his kingdom (40 gall breeder) i have a flukers medium iguana branch that goes to this like tree thing thats in the shape of a y. the highest point of the branch is about 6 inches from the screen top, which lies my 5.5" fixture with a 75 watt zoo med reptibasking spot lamp.. and in the middle i have the deep dome with the repti sun 10.0 compact flourescent... i check the basking spot with my temp gun often to see the temp rise, i havent gotten it to a 100 so far, its at 84 and i turned it on an hour ago.. do i need a stronger bulb? maybe 100 watt to get the correct basking spot? he doesnt seem to sit under the basking light, but goes offset to the right of it on the branch? and he hasnt ate a cricket or veg yet? maybe since its a new environment??

first congratulation on the new beardie. get ride of the repti sun 10.0 compact fluorescent and get the repti sun 10.0 fluorescent tube. the compact fluorescent is bad for them. the temp should be between 100-110 f. you could add a regular light bulb to raise the temps. for eating it could be relocation stress witch could take up to a week to get over. what do you have for the subterrain? solid subterrain is the best to use such as tile, non adhesive shelf liner, paper towel ,and reptile carpet

Congrats on the new addition...we want pictures! :D

First off, get rid of the compact UVB light. See if you can return it and get your money back. What you need is a Reptisun 10.0 TUBE UVB light, or ReptiGlo 8.0 tube. They can be expensive in stores, so I recommend looking for them on PetMountain.com. As for the basking temperatures, it's great you have a temp gun. Just try to get the temps up for him, it's really important that it's hot enough for them to digest their food, and babies like it a little hotter. You don't need to spend money on the special "reptile basking lights" ... you can just use a regular household bulb for that. I think that's what 95% of people use on here :) Play around with the wattages, it can be a little tricky sometimes. If you really can't get them high enough, try using a halogen light, those get REALLY hot. Did you mention what type of substrate you're using?

As for him not eating yet, it could be because he isn't warm enough, or he's simply stressed out in his new house and will take some time to adjust.

Good luck with him!

i spoke with a breeder from "just lizards inc" and he stated my set up was fine, b/c i read the articles and they said it was bad to have them close due to blinding, but he just said to leave the dome on top of the screen, a very knowledgable expert with beautiful dragons... his substrate is green reptile carpet, its ideal for all sizes, and its easy to clean... i did leave 5 crickets in there, and when i just got back there gone, and he passed a stool, the temp from outside the screen was 94 degrees, but when i took the temp inside of it about an inch away, it was 106.3 degrees... he moves and looks alot more livelier.. do they make the housing for the tubes that can set on the screen? bc i dont really wanna get that cover, then have to get rid of my clamp fixture for the basking lite

Hi
Congrats on the new beardie :D .
I am sorry I have to agree about the reptisun uvb bulb. They are at best useless and at worst damaging.I realize many of the "reputable" breeders push them however having been around here a while as well as personally using this bulb myself I am going to have to say go with the linear reptisun.First they have a terrible rate of decay so even if they are emitting the correct amount of uvb within 2-3 months that bulb will emitt no uvb at all. Also the shape of the linear bulb allows for very wierd spreading so your beardie wont get the benefit of the uvb unless he is directly under it within a few inches and at that distance the uvb is dangerous. They emit very low wavelenght uvb allowing for damage not only to the eyes but also cause lowered appetite, lethargy and in some case organ failure. If you feel you are safe using it thats totally up to you but I wanted you to be fully aware of the risks first off.I will say that they are currently trying to test and repair these bulbs however they have not completely resolved the problems with them as of yet.

Hey! I'm planning on ordering a 4x2x2 for my next beardie but I'm worried about lighting. I have a UVA and a UVB but they are small (the UVA just being a bulb and the UVB being 12 ish inches?) My house is drafty so I need a strong light that puts off quite a good amount of heat, any suggestions?
