So we got a new bearded dragon on Sunday. He is tiny, and cute. He is about 4" from what I can measure and I don't yet have a way to get his weight. We got him from Petsmart and I was looking at him and realized that he may be too skinny. But since I am new to the world of reptiles all together I have no idea at all. He ate 6 crickets the first night, 8-10 yesterday and 8 so far today, but he hasn't touched any of the salad stuff I have put in (dandilion greens, butternut squash, mustard greens, and a couple beardie bites just in case). I have yet to bathe him becuase I am worried that it will stress him more than just relocation stress (should I bathe him anyway?) so I have been dripping water on his nose 4-5 times a day. He has kept his eyes closed alot but I don't think he is sleeping becuase he is standing up tall and shifts his head like he is listening to the noises of the house. I currently have him in a 40g with a reptisun 10.0 and 100w basking bulb 109 in the basking spot, ambiant hot side is 87 and ambiant cool side 75. He does not like to be fed in a seperate container he will eat a couple and stand in a corner and want out then I let a few in his enclosure and he will hunt them but it takes an hour for him to catch them (he misses alot). So I guess my questions are...
Is he too skinny?
Should I bathe him yet?
Should I keep feeding the way I am currently or are there other things I can do?
I see a little belly in the first pic so I think your feeding is okay. He will really start to munch once he settles in.
I usually wait about a week to start bathing- I offer water via needless syringe drops on the tip of his nose.
When Tyrus was really little (same as your guy) he wouldn't hunt in a seperate conatiner either. I usually take evrything out of his viv and feed him about 3-4 at a time for 15 mins.
Can he get within 6-8 inches of the UVB with nothing in between?
Right now in the various spots he goes he can get within 8", 10", and 12". I have not been able to get a Higher basking platform yet but I do plan to this weekend. The UVB is mounted inside the tank so there isn't anything in between. Thanks for the quick reply though. Of course i just want to make sure everything is right for a healthy dragon.
That second picture is to die for. So cute. I'm glad the little dude is eating, and I'm sure his appetite will only continue to pick up. He'll pack on the grams pretty quick, I'm sure.
