Hi everyone! I’m new to the forum and still pretty new to owning a dragon. I need some help. I’ve done lots of research and tried different products and tried different ways of setting up the tank and I’m just at a loss here. I did just fill out the account info on the products/setup I’m currently using. I feel like my dragon doesn’t bask enough and doesn’t eat enough and doesn’t drink enough. I thought my dragon was male but now I’m seriously thinking he is a SHE. I have to physically put her on the basking spot or she won’t bask. And even when I put her on the spot she only basks for a little while and then goes back into hiding again. She is always hiding. I have to physically put her on her food dish or she won’t eat. Same with drinking. She goes crazy for live Dubia roaches and freeze dried mealworms, but is mostly uninterested in ANY other food I put out. Only small nibbles here and there (when I physically put her on her dish). Greens, veggies, fruits, dry pellets, moist pellets. I’ve tried tons of different things pretty much to no avail. She passes bowel movements (when she eats enough to) just fine. Stools look normal. She looks healthy (I think). She’s growing. When she walks/moves around she’s not stiff or limping or any other visibly questionable movements. I use calcium powder every time on her live Dubia roaches. She eats 15-20 live dubia roaches in one sitting about 2 times a week. Hottest basking surface temp is about 113. Then it’s a gradient down to the cool side that is 80 at its lowest. At night the tank can get to 60-65 due to a portable air condition unit and a fan I have in my bedroom. I have 2 lamps on for 12 hours and off for 12 hours. One lamp is a PowerSun Mercury vapor bulb 160watt and the other is a zoo med repti basking bulb 150 watt. I’ve also moved physical locations of the tank around a bit because of my other pets being near her and thinking maybe they stress her out? (I have an aquatic turtle/fish tank, and 2 parakeets and 2 axolotls in a different tank - i MIGHT be a little obsessed with animals! Haha!) I will attach pictures. The plants in her tank are all fake silky plants. I just don’t know if I’m doing something wrong or if I’m expecting too much activity from her or what. It’s honestly like if I didn’t pick her up and move her about to food/water and basking she would just stay hidden and laying, in and out of sleep, in this one spot. The lady I got her from was pretty clueless as to her age. She told me she was 6 months old but she was CLEARLY mistaken because my dragon was way too tiny to be that old. Like maybe 5-6 inches nose to tail. So I’m guessing, by her growth rate and measurements she’s currently probably about 9 months? Or just under a year? She’s about 15 inches long currently. I’m so worried about her and just don’t know what to do and really want to do this right. Please help! Thanks in advance.

I would probably rearrange it if you can, so that the vent isnt directly over the enclosure.
Those ir types are not the best at measuring your temps. They only read the material you point them at, not the actual temp of the light( that is the temp you want correct, the light). You need digital probe type thermometers to get the actual temp of the light.

hi- im pretty new to this aswell- but learning along the way- we hve 3 dogs & 2 cats & the 1cat is more curious then i care for-my Letty is very active either-she just bask all day-i handle her everyday-& lock the other animals out during the day so i know she’s not stressing-it didn’t do much or maybe it did-cuz idk how she would still b acting if i didn’t Ya know. i do believe all ur temps &stuff is right on-do u hve a UVB bulb? Do u hve humidity like at 30-40? this will help shed(cuz I didn’t & was told none which made her not shed & b more stressed) If I was you i would give her a back ground clingie thing on the back glass & a little more coverage-more rocks so she can explore- try to make it fun for her & maybe move her away from the windows-I hve read tht can be quite stressful 4 thm-altho we think thy like it- It could b adding extra stress-& young (juvie’s) R already stressed out all the time is wht i read-Letty breathes heavy whn she is stressing aswell-Do u see urs doing this? & as for the pellets of freeze dried anything i would stop using & use all fresh foods& only live roaches & crickets & meal worms but those r only as a treat like 1 every couple of days BUT thy grow so fast it’s crazy I only give her little 1s cuz she was born in May( not sure exactly) & as for fresh food-i searched in my Duck Duck Go app - veggies to feed bearded dragon-& basically am still trying to find wht she likes & dont like-Spring Garden Mix, sweet peppers (not green ones she dont like reg. green peppers) she love acorn squash(which i just gve her last nite) she ate it all-& spaghetti squash the jury is still out on tht-cherry tomatoes, mustard greens-& as of RN cant find much of any fruit she really cares for- those pellets killed my roaches so i stopped feeding tht to thm-& feed thm all the foods Letty gets to-everyday thy get fresh food & i change their containers, crickets eat tht food too. i put a water bottle cap lid & fill it with water 4 the crickets-BUT tbh ur dragon may not like wht Letty likes i found out she don’t care 4 stuff other people hve told me-I read a lot & more than 1 site-kinda like cross check reference-try spending u & her time alone 2 bond-this has helped me out alot-RN she sits on my shoulder as i write this out💕 I HOPE image.jpg THIS IS A GOOD START OF HELPING OUT- like i said im still learning too.. Good luck & keep us posted-!

Also, are drafts bad for dragons? Would it be bad if the screen top tank is underneath the ceiling AC vent? There’s probably 45-48 inches from the vent to the screen top
I would move him I dont know if they are necessarily bad but I would not have him under a draft --I do recommend you get the two digital probe thermometers they are the most accurate - IR guns are good to have but are not the most reliable as they can not read off certain materials or give the wrong reading-- where is the PowerSun? Do you have it on a screen or hanging over the tank so there is no screen? I also recommend getting another UVB a long tube fixture like this Zoo Med ReptiSun T5 HO High Output Terrarium Hood please get this as soon as you can they are selling out - not sure what is going on but some of these UVB's people are having a hard time finding - you want this for extra UVB back up the MVB's are good for heat but not so much the UVB as they need to be replaced more often - and you dont want him going w/ out UVB so its best to have the long tube fixture as well -- I see two bumps above the vent indicating a male -- please cut the baths down to maybe every 10 days to two weeks - too many dry the scales out--- is he a good salad eater? If so they get most of their hydration thru salads -- you can rinse the greens before serving -- once we get the lighting and your basking temps on par then we can see if it is in fact brumation - dragons will start to brumate come fall and you should not keep them from doing that unless they are sick or / and under weight

hi- i was reading ur reply & im wondering about brumation; do they sleep more? eat less? should thy b handled as much? IDK much about it.OH yeah to ur comment about the lights starting to b hard to find: unfortunately this is happening across the globe w/All sorts of stuff & alot of stuff is on nationwide back orders-I work in the car industry & some parts for Recalls they too r on Nationwide bckorders with no ETA insight, if ur lucky to get the OEM parts thy R (ex. Windshield) the shipping is also long it can be 6-8weeks if u can even get it- these are just a few things-Unfortunately this is what’s going on in our world-RN & R only going to get worse with the surge of cost going up,up,up (inflation) & not going 2get better for a couple of years.. Im thinkn🤔 it might b a good idea to get some extra stuff like a backup of her stuff-just in case-Im a little worried of the future & the things tht are coming. All we can do is prepare, pray & 🗳 - I love my Letty & want 2 do the best i can 2take care of her 🦎

but how about brumation? less food eat more sleep more during the day?
They can semi brunate meaning sleep for a few days or a week full brumation deep sleep for up to 3 months no longer - some say get them out every 2 weeks or so to offer water and weigh them some say just leave them one - you can turn lights on regularly schedule and if they are deep sleeping shut them off early-

Okay guys. So I’ve been searching for a tube uvb like you mentioned. And I am struggling a bit. But I did find a T8, 18 inch, reptisun 10.0 tube (see pics) and have mounted that INSIDE the tank right above his basking area. It’s secured to the metal screen. And I was careful to not have it too close. At the closest point it’s about 8-10 inches from his back to bulb. At only 18 inches long it is only covering half his tank right now though, the basking half.

Also, I changed the setup a bit so now he has a few flat areas he can climb up onto (rocks, bricks) and stretch out parallel to the lights. And the hottest basking temp area hovers right around 95-100. But the cool half of his tank stays about 70-75 even through the night. I did get some digital probe thermometers and that is how I’m taking temps now.

I still need to get another uvb tube to light the other half of his tank. And I really want that one to be a T5 but I can’t seem to find the reptisun brand hood kit. But petsmart had an Arcadia brand t5 12% (see pic). Is Arcadia a good brand? Is 12% uvb good enough? Can I sit that on top of the mesh lid? The lid is not fine mesh but the larger-holed kind. Is 12% strong enough? Or do I need to find the 14%?

So after all these changes he does seem to be a bit more active and is basking and eating a little more often than he was. But occasionally he still hides at the bottom and will sleep the day and night away unless I move him to his basking spot and/or food dishes and then he perks up. He’s started eating SLIGHTLY better, but I feel like I’d still like him to eat more/more often. For him to eat and bask it’s about half and half. Meaning half the time I’ve physically picked him up and moved him myself, and the other half of the time he’s moved himself and is eating/basking on his own.

Also one other thing I noticed today is that he’s got some diarrhea. Normally he poops in the bath and it seems formed enough to me, but today he pooped on a hard surface, and although there still was a mostly formed log with white at the end, there was quite a bit of liquid pooling around it as well. I should have taken a picture but didn’t think of it until it was too late and I had cleaned it up. And it was really pretty foul smelling. I looked closely and couldn’t see any worms or weird discolorations or mucus or anything like that. But now I am worrying about parasites or infections.

I would love to hear opinions and suggestions on the changes I’ve made or any other thoughts. Thank you again!

I got rid of all my ZooMed lights and switched to the Arcadia 12% t5. They are very good lights. Since the first of the year 4 out of 4 brand new ZooMeds failed. I'll link a post i made with a video. You don't want the uvb to be the full length of you habitat, they need to be able to get out of it if the wanr to. 2/3 tops on ratio. Some liquid in the poop is ok as long as it is still formed, if they are well hydrated that can happen. Super stinky though could be parasites, having a fecal test done by a vet would be a good idea. Collect it yourself and get it to a vet within a 24 hour period. WHAT EVER YOU DO, DO NOT LET THE VET GIVE AN ENEMA!!! It can end in tragedy.
This is the link to a thread i posted with a video of one of the ZooMed fixtures that failed.

The Arcadia are good fixtures w/ the 12% bulb - wide hole screen the 12% can sit on top 8-10 inches directly over the basking decor -- No 14% bulb unless your tank is 24" tall --- -- if the poop smell is bad enough for you to leave the room it is probable parasites -- please take a fecal into the vet have them test it go from there --- as stated before you do not want a UVB covering the whole tank - they need to be able to sit in the tank w/ out having to hide from the UVB -- 1/2 is good -- please get your cool side up to 80's during the day --- the temps now are for night time --- 65-75 nite temps --

Hi, how long have you had her/him ? How old are they ? When i 1st get my new dragons, i dont go near them for a few weeks to let them settle in. They dont eat a lot until the are more settled ive found with the 2 ive had. They could be to hot and that's why they arent sitting under heat lamp. I got a digital lazer temperature gun and this help me with temperature. I only use a 100watt in winter and a 60 watt in summer

My female bearded dragon has recently started gasping for air all the time. She can’t get sleep or really do anything because she has such a difficult time breathing. I think it might be a RI but I’m not completely sure. Any thoughts?
