So I have these probs and on the rock in the basking area for the Beardie which is 2 months old is 108 degrees. Well he pushes that thing around a lot so when it’s up to the glass it only reads like 92. When it’s in the air it’s a lot lower then the temp on the rock itself. Where should I put the prob? On the rock itself or suction cup it above the rock
I would put it on the rock itself so you can get basking surface readings. I have one that is on one of the basking surfaces and one that is on the cool side. They are zip tied to the sides of the tank but the end is a bit loose and can move around which is fine. You can tape them down if you want to using gaffer's tape or similar. You want to adjust the lighting based on the surface temp readings. If you're getting 108 on the basking rock then that's just about perfect. Shoot for surface temps on the cool side around 75-80 or so. That will make a nice gradient across the tank.
Get an infrared thermometer get the one with a laser I spent 30 bucks at my home depot I still use the stick on thermometers as a guide like with my corn snake if I see the thermometer at 82 I know the temps are right at 85 on the basking side any higher then that I know its higher I check both my beardie and snake temps with the infrared 4 to 5 times daily.that's the most accurate way.
