My two 6 month old beardies, Frankie and Rosie, are both battling coccidia, but Rosie has a serious infestation. She has lost so much weight in the past three weeks. She hardly eats and has only pooped twice.
The baby, two and a half months old, is doing fine and eating like crazy.
We ordered medication for them and are waiting for it to come. We also ordered Acidophilus and disinfectant for cleaning their tanks, also.
In the mean time...
*we are bathing them regularly to keep them hydrated.
*we have taken everything out of their vivs and are laying papertowels over the tiles.
*we put in boxes for them to sit and bask on so we can toss them if they poop.
*we baked all their wood and bricks to kill the parasite but won't put it back in yet.
*we are giving them, espcially Rosie, a lot of love and attention since she is obviously not feeling like herself. She just wants to be close and to be held when we are home. She gets upset when we put her back in her viv since it is so bare without her cool stuff in it.
Is there anything else we can do? Meds should be here tomorow. What else can we do? I heard bleach does not kill coccidia and they can live 10 days outside the host. Is that true? Rotten parasite!!!
These beardies mean more to me than I can say. They have given me so much joy and I hate to see them go through this.
Try giving Rosie some baby food-stage one. Get some chicken or turkey and squash and green beans. I mix an equal amount of meat and veg. Warm it like for a baby. Drop it on her nose with a dropper or syringe so that it dribbles over her lips. She should lick it off. Give her water like this, too, with unsweetened juice,if necessary. They need extra hydration when medicated. Good luck!
She is drinking water dripped on her nose and I am trying to give her carnivore food from a syringe, but she won't eat anything at all, not even a waxy, which she normally loves. She is losing weight so fast. Will try the baby food.
Does bleach kill coccidia? I have heard that it does and heard that it does not.
I am so sorry to hear that Rosie and Frankie have coccidia. On the beardedragon.co website it says that "bleach and chlorhexidine solutions (I think Novalsan is one of them) do not kill coccidia." Snuggles and kisses for Rosie and Frankie. :love10: I hope they will feel better soon.
