Hello everyone! This is my new beardie, Douglas. Picked him up last Thursday, apparently he is around 8 months old. This is our first bearded dragon and we absolutely adore the little guy! He has a very laid back temperamant, is very inquisitve and exceptionally greedy!
I got back from work today to be greeted by this.... "Feed me now mum!"
Whilst mum was preparing his bugs he fell to sleep...
Douggie certainly isn't camera shy. In fact, he's quite the poser!
Aside from eating locusts, Douggies favourite thing to do is bask, and sleep... and bask a little more... It's a hard life
Hi there....Douglas looks very handsome and healthy ! I must say that you are working him to the bone with all the posing for these pics, he may need another locust or 2 to replenish his energy.
Hello we haven't I'm afraid. We only picked Douglas up just over a week ago so I'm reluctant to look around yet in fear and stressing him out. The pet shop that we purchased him from said he was a male however it was a general store and not a reptile specialist so I suppose we can't take that as definite? They did tell me he was big for his age, supposedly he is 6-8 months old he weighs about 281 grams and measures around 36cms. With us being told he was slightly larger than most beardies of his age we were a little more convinced
if you google the difference between a female and male bearded dragon ( its noticed under teh tail) you can take a quick look with or without a flashlight to confirm.
We had a little look around during his Sunday bath! (used your advice Hayl and just lifted his tail, so thanks for that! Glad we could do it in a way that wouldnt hurt him).
It's safe to say he's definitely a boy. We've come to the conclusion he's just a pretty little lad!
Got some piccys of Douggie exploring earlier today.
(notice the papaya on his chin - I think he does this deliberately to prove he actually eats some of the salad mum spends ages preparing for him!)
This did used to be my snuggie but it seems Douggie has claimed it as his own
He's also found a new favourite lounging spot, looks kinda awkward if you ask me
He has been poorly for a little while. Went almost completely off his food, poorly tummy, very lethargic, not wanting to do much at all other than sleep in his little hide.
We were so sad as our little guy was finally coming out of his shell, enjoying his exploring and getting used to us a lot more.
We took him to the vet, she was unable to examine any stool samples as was on vacation for quite some time after our visit, but she provisionally treated him for parasites.
Anyway that really seemed to do the trick! Douggie is now eating/pooping completely normally and thoroughly enjoying his little adventures!
some more recent piccies
Just to be on the safe side, we swapped out his substrate to reptile carpet and have decreased the size of his bugs a little (we think the pet store gave us bad advice). But overall he is putting on weight at a healthy pace and is back to his happy self!
