Hi, I just set up my new 75 gallon tank. I had planned on using a 50 watt halogen light for heat, but I quickly realized that this is unsuitable. I feel like an ***** for thinking such a small bulb could possibly heat the whole enclosure. Does anyone know what wattage will heat the whole thing? 75 watt? 100 watt? 125? 150? Thanks!
A lot (15-20deg) depends on ambient environmental factors like:
Ambient temperature of your room during the day - does it get warm or cool in your residence?
Is it near a window? Is it getting direct sun?
Is there very much air movement near/around enclosure? Is it getting blasted by an A/C vent?
What's the distance between the light and basking area?
These reasons are why there's no set recommendation for enclosure and heating. You need to get your own thermo-gun or thermometer to check how your temperature and gradient is doing for your beardie.
I have digital thermometers and a tempgun. That's why I know that the temps are off. The A/C is on but is an entire room away, and it's not in direct sunlight. It is usually hot in my house, but the A/C is on. The light is 18 inches away from the basking spot, the dimensions are 48"x18"x18". Hmm it blocked out the word i-d-i-o-t... odd. I do have a dome with a dimmer, I just wasn't sure if anyone knew a good wattage. Thanks!
