Gravid beardie with black beard

Hi,
I recently posted about my girl bee,she has been very restless, glass surfing, black bearding and not eating for about 3 days. She has been vets 3 times in the past 2 days, the first appointment they couldn’t feel any eggs but agreed she was bloated and gave medicine to help her digestive system.I held back on giving her any because it wasn’t widely used with reptiles, this morning she was even more restless and agitated.I took her back today at 9am and was told they couldn’t feel anything and wanted to preform and enema,I refused the enema due to the fact I feel it would cause more harm.I insisted that we get an ultrasound to see if she did have any eggs,we did the ultrasound and she is full of eggs.Unfortunately bee is a rescue and was kept with other beardies before she came to me,she lost both her back feet and has a few infections but over the last 2 years she has become very healthy and even a bit chubby.I don’t know her exact age or if she has had eggs before but I am was given the impression by previous owner she was bred.

She was kept in today at the vets and received a shot of anti inflammatory, painkiller, calcium and another to help contractions start.she has been digging a lot and active at the vets but they asked me to pick her up and bring her home as they think she’d feel more comfortable at home.I picked her up at 6 and she’s still very active but has a black beard and bobs occasionally, she has a box (sand and coco soil the block that you wet and it expands, sorry don’t know the name) and she has been digging in the Lay box but is running around a lot.She has drank quite a lot of water from a syringe and seems alert,I’m offering her water every 30-45 minutes. She just seems very uncomfortable and stressed out,I am taking her back tomorrow at 9am for a repeated ultrasound to see if the eggs are moving.I am cautious to give her a bath atm as she is very active and doesn’t seem to want to stay still. She has a constant black beard but only bobs very occasionally. All of my beardies are in housing up to standard and with the right set up lights etc.All housed separately and she has not been near any to mate.

My main concerns are the eggs going bad inside of her,I lost my old beardie to egg binding at 10 and it was very traumatic. Is there anything else I can do to help her,she just seems very uncomfortable and I am worried the black beard is a bad sign or if she’s just stressed over needing to lay.Any experience or opinions on surgery/spaying would also be appreciated as I feel this may be an option in the future.
Sorry for the length of this post and thank you to anyone who replies!

Sounds like normal pre egg-laying behavior so just make sure the nest box is private [ covered ] and the substrate is damp. Can you take pics of her and the nesting box ? I wouldn't take her back to the vet again tomorrow, just give her a chance to lay eggs.

unfortunately I can’t attach a picture but she has a cat litter tray that is filled with sand and the soul and over the top she has the bottom of a cat box lid(has slats in at the sides so she has some air and has a door way big enough for her to get through) both are new and used besides for the beardies.I am worried as she keeps twitching one of her legs, paranoid about paralysis or any signs of her getting unwell from the eggs.Thank you for the quick response! The only reason I feel like she should go vets tomorrow is because she seems to be having trouble laying them,it’s difficult because there is only one reptile specialist at my vets and she won’t be in again for a couple of days after tomorrow.
Also wanted to add she’s been acting like this for the past couple of days with no change in eggs or behaviour, how long before we should start getting worried? Thank you again!

Hello,

I agree, her behavior does sound pretty normal. I posted on your other rescue thread. Since she hasn't
had very good care previously it is possible her calcium levels may not be optimal. Did the vet mention
increasing her calcium levels by giving any liquid calcium?
I am so glad you refused the enema, they can be very dangerous. Especially since she is full of eggs you
don't want to endanger her in any way by doing an enema.
I would give her a bit more time but monitor her to be sure she doesn't become distressed.

Hi tracie,
Thank you so much for the reply, she hasn’t been getting much calcium as she hasn’t been eating for a couple of days. She had a calcium shot yesterday, she is back at the vets now and is going to be having another ultrasound. My vet Zoe has said if she sees follicles we need to spay her and remove the eggs, bee has been active and alert digging but no sign of pushing or laying but is still black beard constantly even when asleep. She has started to get a slight twitch in her back leg which I am worried is due to any eggs pressing on her spine or possible infection. My vet has said she can do the operation today if needed but I am very worried due to her past health and her age.If we don’t remove them through operation she will need to be put to sleep as she can not pass them
Herself she has been trying for 4 days to lay and is getting more and more stressed.

I am worried to put her through an operation and she won’t wake up but I feel as though that would be a better way to go than euthanasia anyway.I am also worried about recovery but she is a tough little bean and has been through a lot.
Any experiences/help with the spaying side of things would be very appreciated as I am loosing my mind with worry over little peanut 😞

Hello,

I posted on your Post operation thread. It does sound like you did the right thing, since her beard
was getting dark. It is always stressful when become restless & unable to lay the eggs.

is my bearded dragons left side supposed to be hard, it’s right above its left leg in the back, it’s kind of hard? i feed it insects and greens. not sure if it’s normal or not? i can post pictures.
His first vet visit went well! Abelardo Texas looks good physically according to his new Dr.
Unfortunately, on the fecal it showed that he has Coccidia. Not a surprise honestly... he has been having diarrhea since I got him. I got Albon, F10, and a steam cleaner on hand.
I'm kinda freaked out, I heard coccidia is a beast to get rid of. Wish me luck! 😭
Sorry didn’t mean to post the last post was an accident, but I do have a question I have a 7 month old dragon, her name is Smaug and she will not eat her salad I have tried everything that I can, just wondering if anyone can help me because I’m stuck and I know that she should probably be eating them by now! If anyone can give me ideas that would be great!
