Gecko Emergency and calcisand

Day 1.
So... I am babysitting a 9 mo. old female leopard gecko for a week. I picked her up today.
She is a special needs pet (missing a leg and has spinal deformities and is partially paralyzed.-due to a broken back from a fight with a cagemate when she was a few weeks old.)
Until last night, she'd been kept on Calcium sand until I insisted that he remove the calcium sand and put reptile carpet in instead. The calcium sand has apparently caused a severe impaction because she has not eaten or pooped in a week! I have been soaking her in lukewarm water every couple of hours (he started the soaking last night) but she still hasn't passed it and now it looks like she has a bruise on her belly. The bruise is dark purple, and it's NOT her spleen.
He told me NOT to take her to the vet, so if I take her *I* get to foot the bill.
His words were "I can't afford surgery for her so don't take her to the vet. I know that if something happens to her, you're not liable. "

it's not about fluffy ducking liability! it's about caring for an animal that he made his RESPONSIBILITY by taking it home in the first place. Then he didn't bother to do research on the things he was keeping her on, so it's HIS fault she's sick in the first place!

I tried anyway but none of the herp vets out here can see her today, and the vet at work gave me a few numbers to call to see if they could help. So far, no luck.

UGH!

the really sad part is: He works at the same pet store *I* do... in the same department. If he can't even properly care for his OWN animals, how can he TEACH OTHER PEOPLE how to care for theirs?!?!

he soonest vet that can see me is tomorrow morning.
I made an appointment.
They quoted me between 250 and 400 USD. OUCH. I don't even have HALF that much money to my name. I know the vet though (he's MY herp vet) and he said he'd work with me.

I called the owner and told him about my talk with the vet and he said "well... she's already lived longer than anyone expected..." I may have to have her put to sleep tomorrow just to save her the pain.

The original vet (the one at work- "owner" adopted her from work because she was injured.) said that she would always have problems with digestion because of the nature of her injuries.
It's definitely not MBD, the vet at work who saw her today said it was an impaction. He can't treat her though because their contract with the pet store we work in won't let them treat any herps that do not presently belong to our store.

I stuck her under my beardie's UV lamps for a few minutes (thinking some increased uv would help digest, she perked up a little and started licking my fingers so I got a waxworm out and pinched his head off (eeeewwww) and squeezed the goo out next to her face. She ate it...

So, she ate a little... and is still perkier (sleeping now)
acted like she was gonna poo for a minute, but nothin yet.

day 2:

Bruiser (<--her name) Update:
the vet said to observe her one more night and if there's no improvement THEN he'll do surgery.
she poo'd in the bath a little (about 3x as much as yesterday), ate 2 waxies and is walking around her viv ('walking' in the loose sense of the word. more like dragging herself around by her front arms) but is still obviously impacted. any suggestions? (home remedies that I can try)

Okay to recap and get help....
9 month old gecko with a calcisand impaction, injuries to the spine. Reacted favorably to UVB.
Okay, try to get a drop or two of mineral or olive oil down this little fellow... This will help to coat the impacted sand to ease passage.
Normally I wouldn't suggest the UVB, however, This time I am. Have you tried any liquid calcium without D3 ?
Continue the bathing, and try the oil.
Please Pm me to let me know how things are working out with this leo.

yes to the liquid calcium, I water it down a bit, dip a q tip in it and wiggle it near her mouth til she chomps on it. haven't tried olive oil, will try that next.
My appt. got bumped... again... Beginning to think everyone just assumes she's "gonna die anyway". The silly thing has had me in tears on more than one occasion, and I've only had her 2 1/2 days!

I completely understand. I have many geckos, and every last one is either a rescue or adopted.
Not bought.
I would also suggest a slurry once the blockage has passed.. Now, the injury was the cause of partial paralysis? Or is that recent ? I wanted to make sure I read you correctly, so do pardon my questioning facts.
If you need a recipe for the slurry, let me know... I can send it off to you in a flash.

no.. she was purchased, and taken home with a customer (in perfect condition). 2 days later, the customer brought her back and she was missing a leg, and her back was broken and twisted. They never really properly explained. We took her to the vet, vet fixed her up, amputated the rest of the wounded leg, and we had to hand feed her for 2 months. she kept getting sores from the way she had to walk and then infections and was constantly on antibiotics. Vet rechecked her and said her back would never straighten (it looks like a roller coaster, not an S) because it had been too severely broken and that she would likely be paralyzed for life. (why he didn't Euthanize her then, I've no idea... I don't think it fair that she suffer this much) Finally, my coworker adopted her and has been "caring" for her since then. this was all about 6 months ago. He called me the other day to say "Bruiser hasn't pooped! What do I do?!" so i walked him through the bathing thing and said that if it didn't work, he needed to take her to a vet. he said ok and hung up.
2 days later, he called me and asked me to babysit while he's out of town on vacation. He said she'd poo'd and was fine now. I said ok. he brought her to work and left her there til the end of my shift. I went in, took one look at her and said "she is NOT ok!!!" thus begins the doom above. I called him and asked for exact details of when she'd actually eaten and pooped. til I got her, it had been 1 week since she'd eaten anything or pooped at all. He'd lied so that I'd agree to babysit so he wouldn't have to cancel his trip.

since I got her, she's had two very small poops that are more urates than anything, and eaten a total of 5 waxworms ("skinned")

Okay, let's avoid the mealies for now... skinned or not. Can you use silk worms or even roaches ? ( I love roaches...) Just the small ones.
If you need I can over night you a small colony of Dubias to get going with.
No charge.
keep me posted.

I don't have mealies, I was using waxworms cause they're "gushy" (also because it's all they've fed her since she was teeny) lol and my gliders love them to death. I don't have access to dubias, or silk worms here :( they all have to be shipped.

Waxies are so high in fat, I don't want to get her on those, more issues to solve in the long run.
Okay, pm me your address and I'll get those in the mail to you tomorrow.

a poem by AHBD (THANK YOU SO MUCH! I LOVE IT!)

Sir Henry the dragon
Looking for his dragon girl
Ventures out in to the wide world
His hopes are up but as you can see
There is no dragon girl for Sir Henry
A light bulb goes off and he takes mom aside
Could you perchance get me a mail order bride ?
