Hey guys, it's not bearded dragon related but there's no other page and there's no specialists where I'm located so I'm in need of serious help if there's anyone who can help.
Under my Frilled dragons frills has gone extremely infected from shed and is also smelling really bad, I've cleaned the areas of infection and got rid of some of the shed bit now she's starting to show signs of weakness.
However I can see that some of the infected surface is bleeding and the blood is clean which is Normally a good sign.
Just want some advice on what to do next as she's only a young dragon and I really don't wanna lose her as I know this is a common issue with frilled dragons ??
Aw that's too bad, can you post pics of her and her enclosure ? Have you asked a local vet to help you find a good reptile vet ? A member here from Australia may help you to find one. For now, get some RAW, unpasteurized honey to put on it. It heals all sorts of wounds VERY well , see if you can get some from a beekeeper or health store. Here's how to post pics :
She's a rescue and was sadly mistreated by her previous owner. Had her a little enclosure to get started on getting her better as she's wasn't in the best state. Things were going really well until I noticed this and the smell was getting really rancid. It's only a small enclosure as she's only a year old. The substrate had been cleaned thoroughly before putting it in and all sharp edges on the tree had been cut and smoothened out. Sadly there isn't any reptile specialists or vets in my area as I'm out in the country and the closest vets don't do reptiles which is rather frustrating. My only option is to take matters into my own hands and clear the infection and get rid of the smell so that she can feel better ??
Aw, poor thing. Well, you're obviously a caring person so hopefully she'll do better in your care. Can you get the honey that I mentioned ? And be 100 % sure there are no insects hiding in the tank, they will go after that wound.
I should be able to get hold of the honey as I do live next door to a farmer that keeps bees himself I believe. The Viv's all clear of bugs I've had a check just now before heading off to work.
If I can't get hold of any honey is there anything else that I can use, like something antiseptic or something that'll get the shed off and stop the infection? ?
That's great if you can get some from the farmer ! I'd say that unpasteurized honey is the best thing because it acts as an antimicrobial and a barrier to bacteria ,also helps with tissue regeneration at the same time.
Try dilute Betadine , a few drops in saline ( til it looks like weak tea ) and use a nonwoven swab soaked in this 3 or 4 time per to wash the wound .
This might help with the infected injury.
I'd also do daily soaks in the same solution letting the solution wet the skin, don't let the dragon drink the dilute betadine.
Keep the dragons tank warm overnight , will help boost the dragon's immune system .
Give liquid calcium ( Calcivet ) by mouth daily, this is dosed by body weight. This will with repairing skin along with extra insect protein if it's still feeding, or get some Herpaboost and give several small feeds by syringe each day , will also help sustain it and build up it's immune system.
works wonders for sink and injured reptiles and they love the taste.
Will take several weeks for the injury to heal.
If the wound doesn't improve in a few weeks, I'd suggest a bird vet to check for a fungal / yeast infection .
In the meantime some F10 barrier antiseptic applied to infected area might be helpful. https://www.vetnpetdirect.com.au/products/f10-barrier-ointment
Unlikely to be insect attractant.
PS , check for ants or roaches at night in the tank .
Thanks for the help folks, but sadly I lost my little girl last night, I can't put my finger on what took her life but I feel the infection is part of the reason ??
I was just coming on to see if there were any updates on your Frilled dragon & read that
you lost her. I am so sorry to hear you lost her like that, it must have been some type
of infection, poor girl.
My condolences to you.
Awe...we are so sorry to hear about your baby. We know how heart breaking it is...we lost our rescue beardie a couple months ago. We have three frillies as well and have a hard time finding information on them specifically. Sorry for your loss.
