I am trying to figure out how to keep the supply of crickets flowing. Do you purchase them once or twice a month? How many more crickets do you buy then your BD eats within the purchase times? For instance if your BD eats 1,000 every two weeks do you get 1,500?
Do you keep track of how many you have taken out of the bin?
Last month I only ordered 500 5/8 crickets and they lasted 1 month and fed my dragon and veiled for a month along with some supers for my veiled...So it really depends on how many pets you have how big and guess what they eat in one day and go from there
For our two adult boys, 1000 mediums would last several weeks - sometimes two months depending on the time of year. By the time I got to the last of each batch they had grown very large and that seemed to work out well for us time-wise. When they were old enough to grow wings and start chirping it was time to order a new batch!
right now I guess at how long they will last based on average daily consumption, and buy one size smaller. I guesstimate a 2wk supply - that that's twice per month.
That way as they grow, they won't grow too big to be fed to our small lizard.
Once he's full grown, I'll likely just buy 1000 at a time, medium size. As they grow it won't be an issue b/c our BD will be able to eat them anyway.
A lot depends on how much your BD eats, how big the crickets are, and etc.
I don't keep track of how many I take out - I've been going more by average daily consumption - then just keep an eye on the supply. If it looks like it's getting low then I order more. Right now b/c it's cold where I am, it also depends on the weather. But, I get them shipped overnight, and if something happens, there is a pet store that I can get some from if I have to. but even with overnight shipping, they still cost 1/2 what the pet store charges. Once it gets warmer, I'll probably do 2 day shipping to save even more.
Okay, So I'm getting a Beardie this weekend, and was wondering how to gauge to buy crickets? (Amount wise) Do I want to order 1000 right away, or wait to see what amount the beardie will actually eat, then go from there, I am looking at getting a young one, but not a baby, and I've priced the crickets on the websites, as discussed in other boards, so I know I can afford whatever he/she may consume on a daily basis, (expecting he/she to consume about 90 a day, on a high end) but I don't want to go crazy and buy 1000, then my beardie not eat them all before they start to die...I've also researched the needs of the crickets to ensure they live longer, so that wont be as much of an issue either. I was told by Petco, the smaller Beardies are on adult (large crickets) which from what I've read can't be the right size, as these crickets are almost twice the size of the poor Beardies heads. (I'm not planning on getting my Beardie from petco) So how do you decide which size to feed them also? And at what rate should I expect the Beardie to jump sizes of crickets? Before someone suggests, I really want to feed him/her Dubias, but my boyfriend is sooo against this, so I'm hoping the crickets will eventually drive him crazy, once they start to chirp, and I'll get my way!! LOL
Hello . I personally would buy the 1000 you will be surprised how fast you go through them. I go through 1000 a week. And also buying in bulk saving for having to have them shipped all the time. You should only buy crickets that are the space between your beardies eyes otherwise they can cause impaction. It really depends on the beardie so grow fast and others grow slower. I was able to get bigger crickets when mine turned 6 months old. I personally don't have roaches. I think they are creepy and my landlord doesn't approve of them anyways. I like worms. They don't smell and are super easy to take care of.
