Custard's first vet visit is tomorrow. He has been throwing up his food every so often (probably because he eats so quickly) and then re-eating it. I know, gross.
I found a good herp vet in my area from online searches and reviews. This will be my first vet visit with a reptile though, and I was wondering what the protocol is for a good successful visit. Any suggestions on what I should do and ask? Also, does anyone know the going rate for a vet visit? I hope not too too expensive, as my father will be upset. I want the vet to do a fecal test on him, but the attendant on the phone said he needs a physical first. He seems fine. He eats up to fifty small crickets a day and occasionally eats his greens. He is also very active and loves basking. I just want to fix his apparent tummy problem.
Great. That's what I was planning to do. Should I just put it in a little plastic baggy?
$100 isn't too bad, but my dad still isn't going to be happy about it. He doesn't understand how I could love a reptile so much, but whatever.
What do they do the x-rays for? To check for MBD or something?
Maybe my vet will give me a first-timer deal. I could always ask, but I don't want to seem rude. That's really cool that your vet loves beardies so much 8) .
Just wrap it in a paper towel and put it in a bag, they only do X-Rays if they suspect something is wrong, so don't worry about it. I wouldn't ask for a first-time deal, just tell them to ask you before they do tests, etc because you're on a budget.
I'm glad that I took Custard to the vet! His vet gave me albon for coccida and panacur for worms. I don't know anything about these illnesses. I just gave him his first doses of medicine, and I think he hates me now. His tiny beard puffed up and everything like it did when the vet was inspecting his tummy. He would NOT let me push the medicine from the syringe and into his mouth. So I just put it on his nose like I do with water and he subsequently licked it off. The only thing is he kept rubbing his nose against his basking branches and getting it everywhere! So I don't even know if he got the correct dosage of each. Idk if he or I can handle five more days of this.
Does anyone know how to administer liquid medicine to a baby beardie in the most painless way possible?
Other than the worms and coccida, he checked out fine. She told me that my husbandry was great and also referred me to a good thermometer. I do need to get a good multivitamin for him. Is Reptivite a good one?
She wants me to drop off another fecal test in three weeks. Hopefully he will be cured by then.
