I was just wondering
I was just wondering if any of you had a link to a website that explains the feeding schedule as my beardie gets older ..how often does he get insects, how often to dust, etc.. He will be a year old in July .. I feed him crickets twice a day, and he always has a salad in his enclosure..I know his diet changes as he gets older, but when exactly I'm not sure
At a year old he should be eating around 80% greens, he really only needs around 30 or so large crickets or the equivalent a week. You can feed him a few daily or larger amounts 2-3 times a week.
I actually had a similar question. Mort is going to be 11mo next week and she seems uninterested in bugs everyday now. I was worried but she eats her greens fine (always in there and topped up fresh morning and evening) and poop/behavior etc is fine. So I'm guessing she's transitioning. I always offer bug dinner at the regular time and let her decide. She's in the habit of about 6-8 crickets every 2-3 days now, although yesterday after not eating bugs for 2 days she had 20+ crickets and then sunk into sleepy cricket coma while basking. lol. So cute.
My question was mainly about calcium once the bugs are fewer. Is it ok to dust the salad with calcium as need be? So far I've been doing calcium+D3 on bugs and vitamin powder on salad, tho not every day on the vitamins.
I would continue to dust the bugs as you've been doing. With the salads, just include a variety of veges and maybe a high calcium staple like collard greens. That should be enough to provide the needed nutrition. Taterbug made a calculator to help create a nice balanced salad. It appears to be down at the moment but it's here https://sites.google.com/site/thelizardmadness/interactive-food-guide
I would love to use three different kinds of "green leaf" veggie in my salad, but the problem Is I end up throwing away more the I use.. And that's even with using scraps for my roaches.. So I use two types of leafy greens.. I switch between collards, turnip, dandelion, endive, and mustards.. I have also used kale a few times..And also cut up up squash and green beans and add it to whatever greens I can get.. I have seen people say that I should use 3 different types of leafy greens in my salad but I only use two.. And once a week I will throw a fruit in with his salad on a day.. Usually strawberries, or grapes.. And once in a while some banana..
That sounds fine to me. That should provide a good balanced diet. Just rotate using whatever is fresh at the store. I feed my scraps to the roaches as well and build smoothies with the rest for a healthy lunch =)
