Was the dental descaling like a mouth rot? Do you know what caused the issue? Sorry for all the questions but sometimes its helpful for others in the future that someone else has dealt w/ this as well -- again I am sorry to hear about him-- its never what we expect and a good learning lesson I guessThanks, KarrieRee. Brought him in for a dental descaling and the vet found that a major part of his jaw bone was infected. She did not believe that he would ever be able to beat it, and she did not think she could remove enough bone/tissue to give him a decent quality of life. Her opinion was the only other thing I could do besides humane euthanization was to give him injectable antibiotics for the rest of his life, but that he would still end up suffering until he died.
It was so hard. I hope that I made the right decision. When I rescued him, I promised myself that I wouldn't make him suffer just to make myself feel better. Then he had his tail amputated and I really thought that maybe I was making him endure too much. I don't know. I miss him, he meant a great deal to me.
And the cause for all the inflamed gums etc? That is too bad 4 yrs is not that oldYes. He had the amputation in April of this year. I had him back at the vets in August, because his mouth was red and inflamed. Did 3 weeks of injectable antibiotics and it seemed to clear up. This past week I noticed he wasnt eating much and that the inflamed areas had returned, even worse this time. I brought him in on 10/22 and had the dental cleaning scheduled. The plan was the vet was going to de calcify his teeth and generally clean his mouth out, as well as take xrays to see what was going on. If all went well, she had planned on giving him another, longer round of injectable antibiotics.
She called me at noon time today after she looked at the xrays (and after Fin was under anesthesia) and told me what she'd found.
No, you're right-- it's not. The truth is, I just don't know. I always tried to give him the very best. And the cause for all the inflamed gums etc? That is too bad 4 yrs is not that old
