Eye help.

Hello, my boy here has had one of his eyes become cloudy, he has new day bulb (1 month old), basking spot is 34oc cool end 25oc 4ft x 2ft wooden vivarium with a ceramic bulb also never has issues with eating a varied of veg and a little fruit, gets calcium and the multi vitamins weekly.

I just spent over 400 on my car and the vets refused to give me any help or even let me send pictures and told me to just phone exotic pet shops for advice 🙃

I can take him to the vets after the 25th this month but how can I prevent worsening? I will deep clean his vivarium again with f10 Veterinary disinfectant, put on paper towels and saline bathe his eye but what more can I do?

If it came about that suddenly, then it's probably more likely to be infection or trauma to the eye. I'm not sure if there is a whole lot that you can do at the moment, but I would probably continue rinsing the eye with saline as needed to help keep it clean, but try to minimize disturbing the eye other than that. Try to see if he is having any issues tracking things on either side of his head. I'd imagine his tracking from the cloudy eye would be lessened, but hopefully he can still see well from the other side. If the weather is good, then perhaps some time outside in natural sunlight would be beneficial. I don't think it will have a direct effect, but basking in some good natural sunlight might make him feel a bit better.
I managed to get him an appointment booked for the 26th with the Exotics specialist I trust. Saved his life when I first got him from a bad breeder and he had a host of issues. He seems okay in that sense will follow the bug and eat them, he does get time in natural sunlight when we have a nice day, basking buddies :)

OK great, I'm glad you were able to get an appointment so soon with a vet you trust. Hopefully they will be able to help get this issue treated successfully. Please keep us posted, I'm interested in seeing what the vet has to say and goes about treatment with this.

Thankyou, he is an amazing vet. I will keep posted so anyone else with same issue can hopefully find this with a solution.

Hello,

I'm glad to hear you got a vet appointment for him. Could he have hurt his eye on something?
Definitely continue with the sterile saline solution for his eye. It does look as though his eye is
possibly infected but hopefully you can get that cleared up. There is potentially the risk of bacteria
from the loose substrate so as suggested, for now keep him on paper towels or another solid type of
bedding to keep his eye cleaner.
Is he eating anything right now?
Outdoor sunshine time is terrific for him, too. Be sure he doesn't get overheated!

Let us know how he is doing.

Yeah I've kinda covered that already! But thankyou for leaving me a comment.

Saline has proved to reduce the mucus production, he was opening his eyes much better today and the cloudy yellow one wasn't gummed up shut. And the one that looks more normal was less watery.

He is still tanking his veg, had some carrot, red pepper, rocket, mango, peashoots with vitamins added today with no issue and some locusts. So he still seems very bright in himself.

As I live in Scotland the days aren't always there where I can have him out. Another saline bathe/flush of the eyes was done! I will keep updating with any changes ❤️

So far my boy has been on eyedrops (maxitrol 2x daily), Metacam and an oral antibiotic (will need to double check name) with getting his eyes bathed/flushed in saline solution before putting drops in, and so far so good, eye cloudiness mostly disappeared before the vets on Friday the 26th Aug, was confirmed to be an infection, they are no were near as watery/mucousy. All info was given to the vet, due to his medical history there was a chance of eye issues, shorter life span etc but other wise he is healthy, this ordeal never stopped his appetite. Once fully better will post some images of during and after.

Hello,

That's great to hear, the eye drops should clear up his issues pretty quickly. It sounds like
he is doing well overall. At least his appetite didn't become affected, either. Definitely post new
pictures of him, when you get a chance so we can make comparisons & see his progress!

Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
Getting ready for another day. Feeling sleepy. 😴
I just walked into my room and instead of looking at me, Swordtail's eyes darted directly to the ice cream drumstick I'm holding
Finally replaced Swordtail's substrate
I miss you so much, Amaris 💔
