We're getting close to ordering a dragon, and will need to also purchase live feeders. My wife, who is not involved in the process, is least excited about having roaches in the house, even though I have assured her they are nothing like the "typical" house roaches that are so nasty.
Seems like it should work, especially for the little guys. You might need to modify it for ventilation if you keep a lot of the bigger roaches.
My wife didn't want to see any strays either, but they inevitably happen (more so than I'd like to admit). On the bright side, they always turned up dead after a week or so.
Living in an apt, the best advice I can give for not letting roaches out:
1. Ensure your container is ALWAYS in another container for the random strays
2. Always transfer roaches over something (one of the bins)
3. The bathtub is your friend for moving roaches/cleaning bins
4. Never leave the feeding tray/bowl anywhere but the tank or in a container
5. Be careful when cleaning the tank. Roaches that have escaped the feeding tray/bowl may still be lurking around
I'm thankful for your reply, and recommendations, but slightly concerned that it's inevitable that some roaches will escape.
Even though it is widely agreed upon that Dubia Roaches are the best, can I get away (and still have a healthy/happy dragon) with only using worms and vegetables. I think the issue with worms as a staple is the fat content, but if I'm not overdoing it (overfeeding), and dusting with proper amounts of supplements, can I get close to the same/similar benefits as roaches?
- I received a second order of 500 dubias yesterday. Rather than put them in with the current dubias, is it recommended to put them in a new container, while I finish the first order, and can then clean the first container when finished? In essence, I'd be cycling back and forth between two containers, in an effort to keep the cleanest environment possible.
My understanding with the BSFL:
- Can remain in the cup they were delivered in.
- Do not need to be fed.
- The substrate they were delivered in is not harmful to the dragon, if a few grains of it go in the feeding dish with the BSFL.
