Dragon or chameleon? Color changing camo.

Oh Kai definitely changes color based on his background...very obvious today where his head and body match the rust colored background and the tail and back legs remain gray to match the ledge. Prob just the lighting but he blends in sooo well!

Just all him Camo Kai . :)
As far as color change, it's usually due to mood and temperature. A chameleon changes intensity , looks more pale or darker depending on mood or to communicate a threat , not to blend in. A female veiled chameleon will stay a light green when receptive to a male but will turn almost a chocolate brown with polka dots to say " stay away , I'm already mated + full of eggs."
Check out these magnificent panther chameleons, their colors are just to dazzle us , they can't blend in to anything.

Now a master of camo in the lizard world would be some of the leaf tailed geckos, have a Google search of those guys ! Well here's one

My Taco also does that a lot - changing color according to temperature and mood, but also clearly according to where he sits to blend in. He also does what Sue E. describes: different body parts, different color.

E.g. temperature: higher temperature, then his spots (i.e. very pronounced head spots, but also on his back) go away and finally all pattern goes away.
Mood: orange vs. pale beard, stress marks or not.
Background: ochre and orange on "fake stones" that look like that, grayish on a thick branch with bark or on a grey concrete climbing structure, reddish brown on the floor (sand).

It took me a while regarding disentangle that and understand what is for what.

a poem by AHBD (THANK YOU SO MUCH! I LOVE IT!)

Sir Henry the dragon
Looking for his dragon girl
Ventures out in to the wide world
His hopes are up but as you can see
There is no dragon girl for Sir Henry
A light bulb goes off and he takes mom aside
Could you perchance get me a mail order bride ?
