coil uvb question's

So I'm wondering what's actually wrong with them. I'm planning on getting tube uvb but I will not be able to purchase one for at least a month as my post office is on strike. I have a pet store near me that sells coil uvb but not tube uvb. I'm wondering if it would work for now? it's too cold to take my beardie out for sun and my sister, who owns a Chinese water dragon, says she uses the coil uvb for hers without any problem.
I heard it can cause eye damage (not sure why though, it doesn't seem brighter then a normal led bulb) but is there any reason not to get it just as a substitute for a month? (hopefully not over a month)

No coils please --- order on line it would be better - here are 3 good UVB's and links -- good for a 40+ gallon tank --24" fixtures
Zoo Med comes w/a 5.0 bulb you need the 10.0 bulb will post link for that
they have the 30" in stock you can use that as well
this one you want the 24" fixture or 2 ft - you need to change the bulb out to the Reptsiun posted above
The screen on the tank will determine the placement and distance -- please post back on there when you get it

The coils output is inadequate for a beardie dragon 🐉 (or any reptile the live in arid climate such as deserts) those reptile thrive under intense sun light and the coils just don't reach that kind of exposure. For nocturnal or semi-diurnal species they are probably ok, but not diurnal species that live in full sun. 🙂

that doesn't really explain why there's something wrong with it though

But if it says 10.0 wouldn't it be the same as a 10.0 tube?

No. The coils have a very small radius that is even effective, your beardie would have to be directly under it to even think about getting any benefit from it. The long tube uvb fan out and cover a broad area. It's the most intense directly under the bulb also, but the fan of light to either side of center, even though less intense still provides enough uvb for them to synthesize d3. It also allows them to move to an area that has the amount of uvb they need. They will self regulate if given the opportunity.

It's not necessarily that something is wrong with it, it's that it is not a good fit for our specific use.

UV coil bulbs produce very intense UVI, at a very close distance to the bulb. But outside of that extremely close distance, it's UVI output drops significantly. It is unable to provide a good gradient of proper UV throughout a decent area in the enclosure like a long tube fluorescent can do.

While coils are good at high intensity UV at close range, tubes are better at moderate UV spread out over a larger area, which is much more ideal in our specific case use. High intensity at close range has no use in this specific hobby.

My tank is about 18 inches tall, so it's shorter and my beardie only ever basks in one spot (on top of his rock hide). Would it be better to go with nothing for a month or two (post office is on strike but am able to buy coil uvb from pet store) or should I order coil uvb as a substitute?

ps: somehow my beardies gone his entire life without any uvb (previous owners, he's about a year now and I got him around 3 weeks ago yet he's been tested by 2 vets and no MBD)

The coil is better than nothing but the sooner you can get the long tube the better.

i  should be able to get it in less then a month, but it realllyy depends
so is it worth it to buy a 30 dollar bulb if I'm only using it for a month or so? or would he be fine for 3 weeks ish

As you obviously can't order to your home address with the post office on strike:
Do you have any pet store that has order to pick-up in store available? Some can order more than what they have right now in the store, and often that's possible through their website.

Also, if you post office is on strike: Is there another shipper that is not your post? In many countries there exist different ones, maybe one of the other ones would work.

--- order on line it would be better
The problem looks to me that with the post office on strike, something ordered online would not be delivered.

Only if they ship USPS --- none of the Fed Ex or UPS people are on strike -- most ship UPS or Fed Ex -- pangeareptiles ships Fed Ex -- I have received many orders from them and they are good and fast and if there is a issue w/ the bulbs they will replace them -

@KarrieRee

Yes, that was exactly my suggestion: Ship with something else than USPS. (Or wherever he is and what is on strike there - if he's not in the US -, generally using a different way to ship.)

3 weeks is way to long to go without any kind of uvb. The thing about mbd is once it happens it can not be cured. It can be slowed and maybe even stopped, but any damage done is permanent.

Hey! I'm planning on ordering a 4x2x2 for my next beardie but I'm worried about lighting. I have a UVA and a UVB but they are small (the UVA just being a bulb and the UVB being 12 ish inches?) My house is drafty so I need a strong light that puts off quite a good amount of heat, any suggestions?
cookie event at my library today, quite fun! Made some bracelets for my comrades too, to give them at church in the morning. Got a busy day tomorrow even though I’m off work… i go back on tuesday so atleast I’ll have 2 days off to rewind….then back to hell lol
