Ok so... as some fo you may be aware (I posted in the introductions section) I recently purchased two bearded dragons from Where Dragons Dwell in Ireland. They are 2 females and currently housed together.
Both are a very similar size and eating well, they have their own basking spots. However since I got them I have read a few 'horror stories' about bearded dragons cohabiting and an now a bit worried...
I bought them with the intention of them living together but am concerned now after some of the stories I have read. I am considering rehoming one of them as the other option would be for me to get another vivarium, which thinking about it... I dont know where I would put it!
Obviously I would only let one of them go to a good home with experienced owners.
What do you guys think the best thing for me to do is? Is there anyone on the forum near West Yorkshire UK that would like to take on another beardie? Please let me know your thoughts and if anyone is interested?
That is a very hard decision to make, but your dragon is lucky to have you care that much about her. I agree that if you can't fit another viv in, rehoming might be the better option for her. You could always try stackable vivs that lay on top of eachother. But separating is definitely best for them. In some rare instances, you can get very lucky with two females, and not have too many problems, but it doesn't happen very often. I have two girls that I got at the same time, from the same breeder.... they are cousins. And I can't even have them in the same room in separate vivs without some sort of divider between them or else one will stare down the other and stress her out to the point where she won't eat. So I think you are doing the right thing by separating them, whether by buying another viv, or rehoming.
Yeah... Thinking about it I would have room for a 36" x 19" stackable vivarium.
I will watch them over xmas but I think a new vivarium will be the way to go as I don't think I could rehome either of them, their both so sweet.
Does anyone house their females together successfully?
I may be over worrying but have been reading up about cohabiting beardies since i got them and have found some real horror stories, which has worried me.
I tied cohabiting two females a number of years ago, it didn't go well. At first when they were young they seemed ok, eating, basking and growing but then one started getting dominate and in the matter of just a couple weeks, they were fighting.
It all depends on their personality and if there is any competition. You probably went the better route by getting another Viv. I personally have two females together right now. They get along fine but as we all know that could change in a second! After Christmas we plan to build a bigger Viv with a way to separate if we need to.
I know quite a few people that house 2 females together, and have for years with no issues.. it's all the personality of each dragon. Some are more dominating than others. I have 2 females that get along awesome, and then the same female hates one of my other females... It's really an individual situation, depending on the beardies. I have 2 housed together that I have zero issues with.
