Check UVB

Need help to confirm do I need to make any changes to UVB.

Recently my dragon started hiding again. He stared at the UVB tube. When UVB off, he will come out himself in the morning but not when the UVB is on (only tested 1 day).

Started since 11 Mar 2024, the first Reptisun T5 UVB tube has been 9 months now, I think it should be the first thing to check. So I changed to a brand new tube. But, my dragon still hiding (only tested 1 day).

Then, I ask ChatGPT, it suggests to check flicker using phone camera, because aging tube might cause flicker that only dragon can see but not us. So I did and here are the videos.

Tube type is : Brand new Reptisun UVB 10.0 T5 HO
From the video is it the flicker that affecting dragon? But when I test with the old tube (which he is ok previously) got the same flicker as well. Possible due to the hood has spoiled and no longer able to control the flicker? Because the hood is not from Zoomed I use China hood.

Round type : Exo Terra UVB 200 13w
Almost having the same flicker as the t5 tube, is this normal or can affect dragon?

So the main question here is does the flicker in the videos affect my dragon? Because he has been hiding. The videos are taken in slow-motion mode 240fps as suggested by ChatGPT.

@xp29 didn't you have bulbs that flickered like this when on camera?

i use the arcadia pro t-5 set up with the 12% bulb myself. i have never had problems like this with them.

hi, did you test with slow motion mode with 240fps?

as per i test normal video is unable to see the flickers

also, 120fps can only see very slight flickers as compared to 240fps

not sure how sensitive are dragons' eyes

I had 4 ZooMed setups fail within a few months, one right out of the box.
I'll post links to my post about them.

The rolling light was making my guys go crazy. Within a few days of replacing them they calmed down.

It's like in a disco party omg. I'm glad that you find it out and replaced, lucky beardies.

So it seems the flickering not coming from brand and tube/bulb type but might be the batch, I should keep changing till I get the right one?

I think the ballast in the fixtures were bad in my lights. I replaced them all with Arcadia pro t5 12% desert lights and fixtures. I haven had any more issues.

I didn't check mine in slow motion. The ZooMed failure was seen in normal speed video. The Arcadias I checked the same way when I switched to them. They looked stable in normal speed.

Hi I found this guide from Arcadia website but still wish to double confirm, for a 16.5 inches tank, to mount the UVB below the mesh top inside tank, I should be getting T5 12% UVB not 14% right?

Yep a 14% is too strong for a 16" tall tank - if you went to a 24" high tank then you could use the 14% but 12% is just as good

Unless your beardie can get really close to the bulb under the screen is better. If they can get within 4 or 5 inches oh the bulb I'd put it above the screen.

Thanks Karrie. To triple confirm, this can be the correct link to buy from right?

Hey! I'm planning on ordering a 4x2x2 for my next beardie but I'm worried about lighting. I have a UVA and a UVB but they are small (the UVA just being a bulb and the UVB being 12 ish inches?) My house is drafty so I need a strong light that puts off quite a good amount of heat, any suggestions?
cookie event at my library today, quite fun! Made some bracelets for my comrades too, to give them at church in the morning. Got a busy day tomorrow even though I’m off work… i go back on tuesday so atleast I’ll have 2 days off to rewind….then back to hell lol
