Ok so heres the deal I adoted a 1 year old male beardie last week. He is 12 inches and 100 grams. I am about 90% sure he is in Brumation.
Previous owners care: 40 gal breeder; Repti Glo 10.0 bulb house in lamp with plastic cover between dragon and bulb; fed collard greens daily no suppliments; crix once to twice a month; sand as substrate; Blue night bulb for basking, but didnt turn on often because owner said he didnt like it (prob cause he was in brumation).
Changes made: 40 gal breeder; Repti Sun 10.0 plastic removed from lamp (now only wire mesh between dragon and bulb); feed daily 1/2 cup of collard greens, carrots, green bell pepper, apple, cucumber, and romane lettuce, Crix 2 times a week. I am now dusting food with calcium +D3 twice a week. Buying a multivitamin in a few days. Sand removed, replace with slate tile and some sphagnm moss for him to burrow. new black light for night (until I can get a CHE) and basking bulb for daytime. Deworming with Panacur now.
When I recieved him I noticed he didnt eat much and his toes were bent in odd ways. I think poss beginning of MBD. So I changed the bulb to a ReptiSun 10.0 last night. Today he ate ALL his food! His color seems a tad bit better. Would changing the bulb have made that much of a differance in just a day!?!?
WOW! Everyone should have this bulb for their beardie! I will continue to post updates on his status over the next week or longer possibly. I didn't realize it would make much of a differance!
It's amazing isn't it!!! I've seen it make a difference in a dew hours!! He really is tiny isn't he! I would suggest feeding him everyday so he can catch up...crickets, I know that he's getting greens each day...
Yes, a new uvb of good caliber, such as the reptisun 10 tube will do that. Up until about 1.5 years ago we had the reptisun 10 tube on our girls. Two years ago Goldie's appetite suddenly diminished to almost nothing. I had heard that when the reptisun 10 has been in use for somewhere between 4 to 6 months, it needs to be replaced. I calculated how long it had been in use and found it to be 4.5 months. We immediately bought another one and a day or two after we had installed Goldie's new reptisun 10 tube her appetite skyrocketed.
Wow. That's great. I cannot believe it has made this much of a differance! IN JUST A DAY! I am blown away!I will never use another bulb. He is so lively now. He has been a bit aggressive when I reach in to grab him, but I figure if I just continue handeling him every day that he will become used to his new home and be a HEALTHY kind of cuddley, not just cuddle because he doesn't feel well enough to move!
So glad to hear he is in a better environment. I would suggest getting some Reptiworms, they are so much more nutritious than crix. And he should have them everyday. Spike eats about 50-70 a day. Give them a try, they are cheap enough and he will LOVE them. Good luck. Please keep us updated on the little guys progress! Best of luck.
