Well, the general rule is:
If he's under a florescent type UV lamp, use calcium with D3 supplement
If he's under a mercury vapor bulb, use calcium without D3 supplement

However, there are some studies that suggest (not prove, but suggest)
that beardies can't really use the artificially added D3 and can only use
naturally produced D3 (from UV exposure).

So if you believe those studies then it's pointless to give D3 supplement.

Me, I'm not entirely certain either way, so I split the difference and give
alternating supplements (Mon - calcium with D3, Tue - calcium without D3, Wed - multivitamin,
Thur - nothing, Fri - calcium with D3, Sat - Calcium without D3, Sun - multivitamin).

How much natural sunlight would a bearded dragon need to leave out the the vitamin D? I give Simon regular Calcium and a multi-vitamin. I don't currently give him the D vitamin and I've had him for a month.

I'm not really up on the various brands.

For my Calcium with D3, I use repti-cal from the pet store.
For my Calcium without D3, I use a pure calcium carbonate powder that I got from beautifuldragons (to help support their reptile rescue)
For my Multi-Vitamin, I use a formula that I again got from beautifuldragons.

(it's a nice multi-vitamin, or at least smells like it, but it is rather granular and doesn't stick to bugs very well, it's more
for sprinkling on salads. I ground it up a lot finer in my mortar/pestle and then it sticks pretty good to the bugs)

About an hour of natural sunlight is better than a whole day of artificial exposure via light bulb.

When it's warm enough (70+ F), I like to get them outside for some real sunlight as much as possible.

Hey! I'm planning on ordering a 4x2x2 for my next beardie but I'm worried about lighting. I have a UVA and a UVB but they are small (the UVA just being a bulb and the UVB being 12 ish inches?) My house is drafty so I need a strong light that puts off quite a good amount of heat, any suggestions?
cookie event at my library today, quite fun! Made some bracelets for my comrades too, to give them at church in the morning. Got a busy day tomorrow even though I’m off work… i go back on tuesday so atleast I’ll have 2 days off to rewind….then back to hell lol
