I’m having trouble seeing if my bsfl are dead. Most of them have turned black which I know means they are molting but how do I know if they are dead? Most of them aren’t moving but I’ve heard if they are black already they won’t move. Another question is how do y’all keep them alive it’s almost like mine die as soon as I get them. I don’t feed them or anything

The most obvious sign is that they are very soft and squishy, those hard black ones you see are very much alive but in their cocoon stage. You can feed these risk free like any other BSFL, just don’t keep them too long!

The first batch of BSFL I ever got had maybe 50-60 full grown flies because I’d thought they were all dead, that was my mistake! You can feed the flies as well as interactive snacks, they shouldn’t be a staple though!

Try to heat them up a bit and they will start moving.
Don't heat them too much or they will die.
Could probably use an oven.

It should cause just enough movement for your dragon to respond.

I’m not too sure about the oven… have you tried it yourself? Otherwise I wouldn’t risk losing a few, they don’t move at all in their cocoon form so that wouldn’t do much.

The method I use is to empty out my container and lay out all of the larvae, if they move they are alive and if not they are dead. Separate the cocoons, obviously.

If the issue is getting your beardie’s attention, wiggle a few in front of his or her snout and they will eventually go for it. Otherwise you can mix them into a salad.

Hoped this helped at all,

Hey! I'm planning on ordering a 4x2x2 for my next beardie but I'm worried about lighting. I have a UVA and a UVB but they are small (the UVA just being a bulb and the UVB being 12 ish inches?) My house is drafty so I need a strong light that puts off quite a good amount of heat, any suggestions?
