Brumation again??

Hello, My two year old dragon, Vhagar, is trying to go into brumation again. He came out of a 4 1/2 month brumation this year in mid March. He had a problem with getting on track of eating. I had a vet check him out and we decided to up his tank temps a little. Right now his basking platform is running about 102 degrees and the cool side of his tank is 85. He wants to stay in the hide all day. I take him out to feed him but then he wants to go back to the hide instead of basking. He has slowed way down in activity and no longer climbs on his branch. Any suggestions?

If he truely wants to brumate, I think you should let him. It is a natural thing for them, even if it seems weird to us.

What about the UVB? What are you using and how old is it?

Just bought new lights last week. I use the Reptisun HO 10.0 UVB. He has been trying to go into brumation for the last month and I have been taking him out of his hide periodically to let him bask and eat. He has been eating fine though.

Ok the UVB is placed where in the tank --- if the screen is a fine mesh like a screen door it should be unobstructed -- screens block approx 30% of the rays -- we want your surface basking temps and UVB on par to rule this out as cause - he could be starting the brumation thing again -- w/ him eating and all that is good

Light is inside not on top. I have to take him out of hide to feed him. He is not sleeping while in the hide. Just sits in there. He used to be all over the vivarium and loved perching on his branch. Now he just sits inside the hide and looks out at us.

I let Vhagar go into brumation around September 2. However, oftentimes when I look in on him in his box his eyes are open. He does not come out though. He is on the cool side of his tank inside his hide that is topped with slate. What temp should I keep his tank at?

Hello,

The overall temperature in the tank or ambient
temperature average should run around 75-80F
in the tank.
It is challenging when they want to brumate again
so close from another brumation phase.
How is his weight & body condition?
At 2 years old, this is common for them to do this
type of behavior. While I am in agreement with
letting them go into brumation as long as they are
healthy, since he hasn't been out of his last phase
for very long try to keep him up & around for a couple of more months if you can.
Bump up his temperatures a couple of degrees if you can. Encourage him to bask by taking his cave out for part of the day.

He is 19 inches long and 542 grams. The vet checked him prior to brumation and said he was healthy. I fought with Vhagar for three weeks in bumping up the temp and removing his cave so that he had to stay out in the light. Some days he would eat ok and then he started refusing all food and wanted to go in his cave. Sometimes when I look in on him his eyes are open and then other times he is asleep. I lowered the temp yesterday. Do you want me to take him out of brumation? He came out of his previous brumation around March 3rd. So, he has been up for 6 months.

Hello,

Ok, he is a good size for sure, so the decision is up to you since see him daily & can tell his body
condition, etc.
If he has been up for 6 months & has been doing well for that period of time, then in my experience
barring health emergencies, it is usually best to let them brumate. Since the vet has cleared him, then
let him do what he is going to do!
He will be happiest letting him do his brumation.
Let us know how he is doing!
