I was wondering what the reccomended breeding weight is for female beardies. I have 2 females (citrus and snow). I just got the citrus and I know she needs to gain quite a bit of weight before breeding so I need to know my target weight, my snow is nice and plump however I don't have her current weight handy at the moment.
I have all the particulars (supplies and bug source) when the time is here. I just want to get her good and ready first.
I was also wondering if you reccomend putting the male in the females' enclosure or visa-versa?
Also how long is reccomended for leaving them together?
At least 400grams. I usually put the female into the males cage. Put them together for 1 week, separate for 1 week, back together for another week and separate for GOOD. You should keep an eye on them as much as you can and if you see them mate then you can separate them. You can usually get it over within the first day or two!
Thank you all for the help.
and yes I've been doing homework on the subject here and there for about 5-6 months now and Sunshine (citrus) is "just about 2" to quote the guy we got her from, and Angel (snow) is 3. Thanks again I'll be sure to post updates when the time comes.
between 300 grams or bigger depending on the length as well. You have the age set. I always put the female in the males cage seems to make him more apt to court her.
Well I wanted to report that I put her in his cage on the 9th and it took about a minute, then 5 after that and 20 after that, she is now pretty lumpy, swollen, and eating like an Iguana that likes bugs too.
I can feel about a dozen eggs just by lightly dragging my fingers across her belly, needless to say I'm super stoked. I already have homes for 4 of them, though a couple are trades for other babies, I know they will be well cared for. My laptop is busted so I don't have any recent pix but here is a link to a post I made a while back. She has gained an inch and a half and almost doubled in overall size sense I got her.
I would like to thank all of you that took the time to answer my questions then and now...
Well today Angel is quite restless, not staying put for more than 5-10 minutes at a time and is all over her cage. My homemade incubator is staying steady at 81.5 in the egg container and I'll be setting up the laybox tomorrow.
She is not going out of her way to eat her bugs, but is still on the salads.
I do have a question though, I have read to keep an eye on the poop but never why, she is a daily baither and poops in the tub.
She had a tiny, yet well formed and complete poop today. Is this good, bad or indifferent?
I forgot to mention that while at one of my reptile shows that I sell fake rock hides at, yesterday, I have another 6 or so homes for my babies when they arrive.
I must admit that it feels good to have been patient over the past year and gone about this the right way, I can't imagine doing this on a whim and any good coming out of it, both for the person and animals involved.
Well, time for todays update...
Angel is still restless and has started digging a little, at her cage door and is now in the tub, submerged and pawing around. It's almost here, I can't wait!
Yeah, I started her a hole but she ignors it, she has however been digging like CRAZY in one corner for 2 hours now and is appearantly on a mission, should be soon hopefully, I'm a nervous wreck right now.
She'll lay. Try not to go nuts in the meantime!
Mine did this for 3 days (hope yours is nicer) and then finally laid 16 in the hole I dug at the other end. They like to torture you.
