Momma (Pink) with daughters :) Not a single nipped fin in the sorority. Sometimes flaring and chasing over territory occasionally, but mostly between 2 and 3. Mom is in charge, but the large white female has her side of a stick that only Mom can cross. The others stay away / wander in then get chased out. But Violet is my next breeder and looking for her own territory to attract a mate.

Heya we went and visited Ash meadows this weekend. We stumbled upon a warm sping called Devils hole.
It is home to the only population of pupfish in the world 🌎
They are friggen beautiful (if small) they are critically endangered.
I'll post a couple pictures (from online, I didn't think to take any myself) and a link to the Wikipedia page. I thought you might fing it interesting 🙂

I had actually heard of them earlier when I was looking into all the stuff that pops up in ephemeral pools around there. I read about them but hadn't seen a pic until the article. The pics you posted are better ;)

That was just some from a quick internet search. But they are really very pretty. In person there is little flashes of color as they dart around

Like the pupfish it's endemic here in the PNW and protected because of all the protections given to the pupfish. So there are more of these and the populations are stable where protected. But also a beautiful fish. I wish they weren't illegal to keep (IIRC it's even illegal to remove them from the water period) because a breeding program to stock them back to their original range could also produce beautiful ornamental fish that can tolerate cold water etc...
Almost like a Killifish but not tropical:)
Betta spawn update: Still preparing lol
The spawn grow out tank is full of live food that is reproducing with a new experimental food. I have good success with taro, but I soaked mung beans with crushed red pepper flakes and yeast. Been taking the fermentation water and adding that and a few beans into the tank. Working well and also low odor like the taro. Kale water made the house smell like farts and was unstable as a food. Natural Greenwater is unreliable and gets used quickly. Nice to have alternative food sources / full spectrum feeding.

Scud hopped into the photo there. Little shrimp basically. They will eat at the beans and the daphnia etc .. eat particulate matter in the water column.

Those are pretty cool lil guys to.
I'm not a wacko climate change looney, but I do believe in good conservation and protecting nature that would otherwise be lost.
Sharing stories and photos are a good way to raise awareness and interest 🙂

Pinkie?
Under the blue mixed light the blues and purples really show on him. The red saddle is a relatively new development and I think is his final pattern. He's a bit older from the first spawn and father of the one with all the white and funky red lightning like pattern. The blue one I'm a little disappointed how he ended up. The royal blue came in very late over the black pattern :(

So they change color as they age? I did not realize that and missed it if you had mentioned it. I kind of like the idea of not knowing what the final look will be. For me that would keep me interested in watchingbthem grow.

Yeah, they don't tend to have their final pattern until 12-18 months.

a poem by AHBD (THANK YOU SO MUCH! I LOVE IT!)

Sir Henry the dragon
Looking for his dragon girl
Ventures out in to the wide world
His hopes are up but as you can see
There is no dragon girl for Sir Henry
A light bulb goes off and he takes mom aside
Could you perchance get me a mail order bride ?
