I am going to be a brand new owner in a few weeks here. I was wondering what to do for the night. do I need a ceramic night light or can I get away with no lighting. during the day I am gonna have a basking light of some sort and of course a uv light.
Also when i buy crickets i can buy them 1000 at a time. is this a good idea or will they die before i can give them to my beardie?
Lastly any other information would be great!
as long as your night time temps don't drop below around 60 degrees, you should be alright. as far as the crickets, as long as you keep them alive it is deff. worth it. buying crix at the pet store gets expensive!!
Hello and Welcome! Congrats on your decision to get a beardie! You won't regret it I can promise that... Now on to answer your questions... If the temp in your viv stays above 65 @ night then there is no need for a night time heat element.. However, if it falls below 65 then I would def recommend getting a ceramic heat emitter... Don't buy the bulbs that give off light @ night.. Any type of light @ night will interfere with their sleep.. The best type of UVB bulb is the reptisun 10.0.. As far as the crickets go i wouldn't order 1000 right at first b/c chances are your beardie will suffer from relocation stress and may not eat a whole lot when u first get it and the crix will die before u can feed all of those.. Just a few tips.. Feed your beardie as much as it can eat within 10 minutes.. Don't feed anything that is larger than the space between the beardies eyes.. Make sure u steer away from sand it can cause impaction and even death.. Use something like reptile carpet or non adhesive shelf liner for your substrate... There are tons and tons of people on this forum willing and ready to answer ANY questions you have.. So ask away!
You can feed them roaches, they're the best feeders in my opinion, plus when you get your roach colony going you won't have to buy another feeder again. And they are more nutritious than crix.
I have B. lateralis and B. dubia roach colonies, so my lil' bud doesn't have to eat the same food all the time.
If you buy 1000 crix at a time, which is what im doing soon, make sure u have a dish of gutload, and a dish of crushed up dog food(for protein, crush to powder) and dont put a water dish in,put large amounts of lettuce, its cheap and 90% water!hope this helps
