I was using superworms as a staple in my beardies diet but she's completely lost interest in them recently. She's never been picky about what she eats; crickets, waxworms, supers, pinkies, and of course veggies. Crickets are a waste of money seeing the tend to eat each other or just die after a few days, which is why I switched to supers in the first place. For months she would eat a ton of supers and I could barely keep up on purchasing as much as she would eat, but lately she won't even eat one. Her health is almost certainly not the issue but I'm afraid it will be soon if I don't find a replacement for her daily protein. I thought about going back to crickets but the money factor comes back into play. So I was wondering if anyone in MA sold roaches because they're not available at my local pet stores.
Roaches are a ridiculously easy to ship (and keep!) bug, and their life span is over a year. It's not like crickets where you only have a few weeks to use them before they die. It's probably the most cost effective and easiest to order them online. I work at a pet store in Boston and I can't say that I've seen roaches on the regional wholesalers' feeder lists, but it's worth asking your local store if they'll special order them for you. Those would be delivered by truck, not mail, so they tend to fare a bit better.
I'll be down the cape in a few weeks. My 2nd generation of silkworm eggs just hatched. My problem is I'm not going to be here to feed them when I go to the cape(and I really don't want to bring them on vacation with me) Let me know if you want some. Beardies love them and they are the best insect food for them. I have hundreds, in a few weeks they will be nice and plump. As far as roaches most are ordered online and shipped to you, I've never seen them in stores in Ma.
