Bone cancer or something else?

Hello,

That is great to hear his tail seems to be doing better & that he is moving it easier now also. I hope it's healing up finally. They do heal up slowly but keep up the great work!

Thank you. Interesting to see if this is something that can be entirely cured, or if it is something we can make a bit easier for him.

Hi everyone.

Yesterday we had a vet check-up. They took some blood samples, and since they were all good, decided to amputate my beardies tail. He woke up from the procedure very well and got to go home the same night. So far everything seems okay. He has a good appetite and is moving around his tank normally. I give him another antibiotic for the next ten days, and painkillers for a few days or as needs be. The lump will be further examined what it is and they'll give me the information once it's done.

I now have a beardie in my home with nearly all his tail amputated. It does not seem to effect his quality of life at all. Hopefully it's the same for yours. I'm sure there will be an adjustment period for him, but I think he'll be just fine 🙂.

Great to hear your dragon is doing well without his tail! They are tough critters for sure.

He will definitely be fine as long as whatever the condition is doesn't appear somewhere else, and ended with the amputation. Hope we got more years to come with him, so it was well worth to put him through this. He seems to even be moving better without the tail, especially when turning. That lump must've been so heavy to drag along.

I was so relieved those blood tests were normal, i was expecting something to be off. I said to the vet that i don't want my beardies tail amputated if the tests show signs of illness or intestine problems, considering his old age, as it might be pointless if he is nearing death anyways. Lucky there was no sign of illness or other problems.

That is indeed a relief, I'm very happy for you both. I hope you still have years and years with him 🙂👍👍

Hello,

How is he doing today? Please keep us updated on his progress! We are all pulling for him.

Hello.

Sorry i haven't posted in a while, i've been ill myself.

Beardie is doing well, antibiotics are reducing his appetite, but otherwise he is alert and active. The amputated tail seems to be healing well, no signs of problems have occurred. Haven't heard the pathology results yet.

Thank you all for caring.

Hello,

That is terrific his tail is healing up really well. Be sure to give some probiotics right now, while he is
on antibiotics. That should help with appetite while he is on antibiotics.
It's a great sign he is very active, too.
I'm glad you are doing better also!

The X-ray shows significant bone irregularities in the tail, consistent with your vet's concern about osteosarcoma, a malignant bone tumor, though osteomyelitis (a severe bone infection) is also a possibility. The lump's impact on tail movement suggests potential nerve or spinal involvement. A biopsy or fine-needle aspirate will be critical to distinguish between cancer and infection, and blood tests or advanced imaging may help confirm the diagnosis. While osteosarcoma may require amputation to prevent spreading, osteomyelitis typically involves antibiotics or antifungal treatment. It’s encouraging that your bearded dragon is active and eating well, and your upcoming follow-up appointment should clarify the next steps.

Hi everyone!

I got the pathology results, the tumor is a chromophoroma/melanophoroma. I suspect the first one, as my beardie had a small chromophoroma on his side a few years back. Since this is a second tumor, he will probably develop more of them in the future. Research suggests that UV-light has a lot to do with them, so i am now thinking of having the UV-light on for a couple of hours less per day, if that would have any help in the future. To me it has sometimes seemed as if my beardie was kind of avoiding the UV-light, which would make sense in this case.

Dragon himself is happy and energetic, eating well, enjoying life with a bright orange beard. From now on, he'll get to sleep more since i'll be shutting the lights earlier than before. Grampa-beardie probably will like that.

Thank you all for caring. I hope this thread will help other beardies and their owners.
