Just store it in a ziploc (and then in a paper sandwich bag if you wish) and keep it cold. The fresher the sample the better. At the vet they usually record weight, do a physical exam visually and by feeling their belly. They may do additional tests such as a fecal test, blood text, x-ray - that all really depends on what the vet feels is necessary.
