Hi Guys, I recently purchased a new beardie from a breader who was afraid it wouldn't get a new home due to the fact that the tail was bitten off by an agressive cage mate. She gave me some iodine and advised me to apply it twice daily. In your opinoin is this a good idea? It looks like it's healing up really well (the wound was almost completely closed when I got it).
I'm also keeping the cage very clean in hopes that no bacteria remains to lesson the chance of tail rott, ect.
Sorry to hear about your little guy's tail. That's wonderful that you picked him over one with no problems.....that makes him very special
You mentioned that his tail seems to be healing nicely...that's great! I'm not real sure on the Iodine, but I do know that giving your little guy Betadine soaks will help fight off infection. You can use a little rubbermaid type container, mix Betadine & water together until you get a solution that looks like weak tea.. You don't need alot, just make sure his tail is totally in the solution. Do that a couple times a day.
When finished with the soak, pat dry his wound with a clean cloth and apply Neosporin, to aid in healing.
Don't use iodine on your new pet, it will sting. As Dawn suggested, Betadine is a much better option and is just as easy found. The betadine baths and antibiotic ointment (neosporin, polysporin ect) after he dries will do the trick, and it sounds like your doing everything right with the enclosure.
