Hi everyone,
My beardie called Greg is 3 years old now and just come off a sparodic shed, this took about 2 weeks or so and often when Greg sheds he doesn’t eat much and is usually very lazy and sleepy this is normal to me.

However this week being free from shed now I have noticed a swollen left leg-

I have attached a link to an album for pictures and a video.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/130513649@N05/albums/72157719959893843

This swelling doesn’t seam to cause him pain when I touch it but he does not want to put weight on it at all when walking , it almost seems weak as time I’ve seen his leg start shaking.

He also has yet to really eat properly since his shed.
He has pooped this week but only the once.

Now researching through this I am coming across what Could be early signs one MBD I’m thinking cause he hasn’t had much calcium supplements due to him not eating a lot recently ??? I have also changed the UVB bulbs yesterday too not sure if this would help??

I’m also coming across Gout but really not sure how I can tell the difference and what it might be ??

What can I do to help Greg??

Ps I don’t have meany trained reptile specialist vets near me so I am coming here for help first please help

First do you have a hammock in the tank? Second what kind of UVB are you using? NO coils please--- we need to rule out the hammock before going on to other things --- you need to be dusting the insects your feeding w/ calcium D3 at least once per week depending on the UVB is going to determine the calcium used ---- next where is the UVB in the tank or top of screen --- gout is painful so if hes not flinching when you touch it its probably not gout -- UVB and basking temps are the two MOST IMPORTANT things in the tank -- temps need to be taken w/ a digital probe thermometer NO stickons they are inaccurate

No I don’t have a hammock in the tank.

I use x2 strip bulbs (x1 UVB 150, x1 UVB 100 both exo terra brand) both located on the roof of the tank.
I often dust greens with calcium on the daily but again not often he eats it, I make sure I dust the insects I give him too.
Okay that’s nice to hear it defo isn’t painful when I touch him just seams like he doesn’t want to put weigh on it.

I do use a digital probe making sure the hot part of the tank is at 40C in the day and between 18c - 22C in the night

I am thinking some how he has sprained it --- maybe jumping or falling off something- but you need to get rid of those UVB's your using --- coils are NO good --- please invest in a Arcadia Pro T 5 w/ a 12% bulb ASAP- you can see if they have them in stock here -- as of this time in the states people are having a hard time finding them and it looks like they are out of stock there as well
https://www.reptiles.swelluk.com/arcadia-prot5-kit-desert-12/ this is what you want and I see its out of stock here as well -- see if you can get this it is good as well

But you need this UVB for your dragon to be healthy ---- please get this ASAP---- when you get it post back on here and I will help you place it in your tank -- depending on the top of your tank will depend on the placement and distance --

Thankyou for this Karrie, so you think it’s not something I should be more worried about, as in it’s not early signs of MBD or something along those lines?
Could be possible he could have hurt it in some way should I just be monitoring for the time being then you think ?

Thankyou for the details on the UVB lamps I really will look in to them as I’m not entirely impressed with the exo terra brand especially when it comes to bulbs it’s just the only brand my local store does.

It is imperative that you get the uvb changed out ASAP-- it's gonna help w/ the healing of the leg- at this point he's not able to absorb his calcium - that is what the uvb does- after you get the uvb changed watch his behavior - let me know what you get and I will help you get it placed in the tank- as far as gout the only way to know for sure would be to have a blood test done to check uric acid level- what insect are you feeding him? I would get some sort of substrate w/ texture in the tank it's possible he has slipped in the tank- is the whole flooring like that? I am gonna some others look at his leg

Hello,

I think you posted on another forum too?
It looks like it could be gout, but hopefully he just sprained his hand/wrist. Did it seem to
become swollen overnight or a slow progression?
Which UVB are you using?
I would keep an eye on the leg but if you wanted to be proactive you could start giving him
black or tart cherry juice daily to see if that helps him out.

Hi tracie,

I haven’t posted about this issue before.

I have noticed it to happen just over night, like mentioned he doesn’t flinch at all when I touch his leg, can this still be gout?

I think I will get some cherry juice anyways, as it can’t harm him anyways can it ?

I use x2 30W 36inch strip bulbs in the tank (one bulb being for UVB 150 desert and the other UVB 100
Natural light ) both made from the Exo terra brand.
does all this sound suitable, or should I be looking at better bulbs/fittings?

Hello,

Sorry about that, it seems like a lot of cases are going on these days, with regards to gout,
or gout type symptoms.
The UVB light from Exoterra is that a long tube or a compact/coil light? You mentioned you
are using a long strip bulb, so one is a UVB light?
The Black or tart cherry juice would be fine to use for him. It definitely wont hurt him & is
very healthy also. Just give .5ml to 1ml, daily.

Hi tracie,

Please see link and you’ll see photos of my lighting set up to make things clearer, again there are no coil fittings.

Is this lighting good enough or should I be looking at something else eg like someone mentioned the Arcadia brand?

Okay Thankyou I will get him some juice.

Thanks
Mitch

Those are tubes but I would switch one out to the Arcadia if you can find them now there are shortages of the 24" 12% Desert here in the states --- I had checked one place over in the UK area and they were out too of the 24" length --- you can get the Reptisun brand 10.0 T 5 they are just as good tho -- you dont need two UVB's in your tank -- one good one is enough --- and you dont want to over UVB him-- if your tank is huge length wise 2 would be fine but most people usually have a 4x2x2 for a large tank --

What is a quick way to warm up a cold beardie? His heating element went out overnight and now he's very cold.

Clapton is acclimating okay I think. He's quick as lightning so I'm not sure how much I should bring him out of his house yet. He's not at all interested in his salad though. I wonder if I should change what I'm giving him. Least he's eating his crickets.

Things to do:
Buy calcium powder
Material to raise surface for basking spot
Scenery decals for back of tank
