Hey so Dorito came out of burimation not too long ago. I started noticing him puff his beard and takes a struggling breath. It happens once and awhile and mostly in the am. I had an appt. with a Vet a week and a half ago for his 1 yr check up and this concerning noise. I asked the vet about it and he checked his breathing everything seemed A okay. The vet didn't think much was of concern, just a little dehydrated and some teeth needed cleaning. He told me to bathe him every day and feed him softer insects (instead of super worms) as well as veggies of course.
So I orded up some Horn worms and hes been pretty good at chowing them down, and even eating his greens. I questioned the giving baths with his possible resp. infection but figured he knew best. So Ive been giving baths too.
Ive noticed his difficult breathing hasn't gone away he still does it every once in awhile. Its not all the time, just when hes under his basking spot it seems. Humidity has been kind of low this winter so not sure if that is a possibility? Should I start him on some anti-biotics? I feel if I bring him back to the vet he'll just tell me to buy some anti-biotics anyway and charge me for that info haha.
So my concerns are, are their side effects I should worry about? and which medicine is the most highly recommended? Also some advice from some people who may have come across this situation? And finally how to give medicine effectively ?
Hi there.....what are his temps. at night ? You might try keeping it around 80F to boost his immune system. I would cut out the daily baths, that's the old school thought that it will hydrate them through the vent, but they only benefit if they are actually drinking. A bath twice a week is plenty, and afterwards dry him off + put him back in the heat of his tank . It may be something he'll just shake off.
the temp at night is ush 75-78 degrees. Its been warm out at night recently so raises the house temp. Thats good to know, I havent been giving daily baths becuase it just didnt seem right haha but i would give a bath probably once every 3 days. He doesnt drink much when hes in them just swims around a bit. I was hoping the water in the horn worms will help hydrate him a bit.
Good to know he could shake it off and keeping the temps warmer at night. Do you use a over the head heat emitter? or is there any other ways? wrap him up in a soft blanket? haha
